I just haven't felt comfortable with him in save situations for the past couple of weeks, either. I'd sure like to see a reappearance of the guy who was shutting opposing teams down for about the first five weeks of the season. As a previous poster alluded, Graterol was lame today.

they'll eventually get Scherzer and DeGrom back, they're alot better than last year even if they have been a little bit lucky. But we'll have to go on some insane run to catch them. Mets will eventually go on a cold spell, it's gonna come down to how we do vs them in the head to head games. Still got like 15 games left vs them.

No argument from me and you can't ignore the boost they'll get when deGrom and Scherzer return. I want to see how they react when they face the inevitable adversity with which every team deals in the course of a 162 game season--especially under the unrelenting heat of the New York media.

I agree winning the division is a goal, but i'd focus on locking up a WC spot first. Try to cut the Mets lead to 5-5.5 by the end of the month. I can't believe we swept the Rockies in 4-games. That's insanely good, even if it was touch and go for most of the series. That team meeting really set this team on the right path. They are grinding AB's now, not giving up on them, and hitting the ball hard. The pitching was also pretty good all-in-all. The Rockies are bad, but they play over their heads at home. I feel like we slayed some demons here, since it wasn't that long ago the Braves lost 11 straight at Coors Field.

Depend what he's looking for. Since 2019 Swanson has played in 401 games and totaled 9.7 fWAR. That's 3.9 fWAR per 162 games.

I suspect that fWAR per 162 will be lower by the end of this season as I honestly don't suspect Swanson to play at this level (on pace for over 6 war this year) but I think he's proven easily that he's a 2-3 WAR SS right now. He will be 29 so you have to factor in how long you believe he will play this level. Would you pay him market level to stay? The Braves will have a big hole at SS with no real prospect to take his spot. Barring a trade the team will have to pay market value for a replacement.

Yep. Not sure if Dansby would give a discount either. So with Boggarts, Trea Turner, and possibly Correa all FA if we are gonna upgrade the position this would be the time. We should have the money to sign any one of the 3 we want. Hitting Turner after Acuna would be a nightmare for other teams on the base paths.

The advantage with Swanson is he’s likely not going to require a contract length that takes him too deep into his aging years. I assume Correa only opts out if Boras is confident he can get him 6-8 years. Turner will definitely get the years.

Here's a couple tidbits from this series:

The Braves have never before swept the Rockies in four games at Coors field. The only 4-game sweep was in their first year, in 1993, where the Braves went 13-0 against the Rockies, but that was played at old Mile-High.

In fact, since I moved to Colorado in 2000, the Braves had never even WON a 4-game series at Coors. The series record stood at 0-4-5 in 4-game series, with the Braves being swept in 2015 and 2016 (part of the losing 11 straight). On the other hand, they have a pretty good record in 3-game series over that same time frame, sitting at 9-3, with 3 sweeps and one swept.

So given the history, it was quite a great accomplishment, especially given that I had to sit through many of those grating losses to mostly inferior Rockies teams.

Here's another interesting tidbit the Rockies announcers had yesterday. Games 2 and 3 were the first time in the modern era that a team (the Rockies) was held to less than 6 hits in back to back games AND both went to extra innings.

With Turner, Correa and Bogaerts heading the SS list with Swanson serving as a decent consolation prize, I think SS is the place to splurge.

Who will need a SS? Braves, LA, Cubs, and...? The Red Sox signed Story to replace Xander, and the Twins only got Correa because his market collapsed. So that's 3 teams for 3.5 star SS.

AA should probably wait for one of the top 3 guys to fall in his lap for a deal like Correa's Twins deal, and use Arcia as the backup plan. The risk is obviously going into 2023 with Arcia as the everyday guy, but that's the play if they want a bargain star SS.

I still don't see any way the Braves are among the highest bidders for the top free agents. History shows that they never are. Even if payroll gets another bump, I do wonder anyway how a high priced signing like one of those would limit us in the future as far as retaining our core.

There was a recent article that said the Phillies would be in on one of the big 3 shortstops as well, in addition to the Cubs.

How much of the Braves core needs to be locked up? Riley and Fried (ymmv). Wright and Contreras will be cheap for the next few seasons.

The Braves have quite a few bad veteran contracts that will be coming off the books the next few seasons (Smith, Duvall, Morton.. Rosario the year after.. Ozuna the year after that). How well AA replaces them with free agents will dictate what we will be able to do complementing the core of Acuna, Riley, and… sigh.. Ozzie.

You make a very fair point. I guess also if Harris sticks and if Contreras is legit are both determining factors. But in the coming years, we will need essentially a full bullpen, at least 1 OF, a DH, multiple legit SP's (especially if we don't keep Fried), and eventually a 3B if we don't keep Riley. Not sure how much of that we can fill from within the organization and keep getting cheap production.

I dunno, the ownership since they've taken over haven't show any appetite for a rebuild. They seem to want to just keep throwing "stupid money" at their holes, and not look in the mirror and understand ow poorly the organization is being run (especially development).

The answer is probably none. We can already see the point the window of contention will close on this Braves core. This organization simply isn't on the level of organizations like the Rays, As, Astros and Dodgers at consistently churning out impact players. They got their core from the rebuild, and haven't done much since.

The trick for AA will be to know when it's time to blow it up and start a 2-3 year rebuild rather than dragging it out and forcing a 5+ year rebuild. I always link that timeframe to right when Fried hits FA after the 2024 season. At that point the core will be aging, expensive, and AA won't have the resources to continue plugging the holes. They will have 4 years of Acuna and 3 years of Albies that could immediately build a new core for 5+ years of contention.

However, that changes if Harris becomes Adam Eaton, Contreras becomes a 4 win catcher, and Wright becomes Wainwright. At that point they ride out the Acuna deal, and look to rebuild somewhere around 2027.
