Don't really like to hear that Terdo thinks he needs to swing at every strike.

07-10-2013, 01:54 PM
Look at it another way. If we would have brought in a player like that and they didn't perform they are easily replaceable. We'd also be able to use the $75 million we used on Upton elsewhere.

What inexpensive free-agents were out on the market this past winter that fit this idyllic profile? Because Span and Revere both cost assets despite (and because of) their lower salaries.

Well I simply fundamentally disagree regarding the significance of this prototypical leadoff hitter. The team needs productive hitters; it needs the players they've promoted, signed, or otherwise acquired to hit to the levels of their capabilities. Acquiring unproductive players like Span or (to a lesser extent) Revere, and giving them the greatest proportion of team PA, just because they're Official Leadoff-Style Hitters is unproductive.

could not have said it better myself

Don't really like to hear that Terdo thinks he needs to swing at every strike.

He's never been a pinch-hitter before. He's probably far too anxious since he's only getting 1 at-bat every few days when he's used to starting. It's one of the reasons Bobby didn't like to bring up a kid and then let him rot away on the bench. He immediately gave him a start to try to get rid of those butterflies. I don't know what Joey T has to do to get a start.

Because we already had Dan Uggla, that's why. One of those type of hitters are fine, not more than that. He's just not a good fit for this team and never was. Also once you give him all that money you are stuck with him and limit your option to improve if it doesn't work out. And let's be honest there was a very good chance it wasn't going to work out. You said earlier players that don't walk and strikeout a lot aren't good hitters......well what does that make BJ?

BJ actually walks at a decent clip.

2007 - 65 walks
2008 - 97 walks
2009 - 57 walks
2010 - 67 walks
2011 - 71 walks
2012 - 45 walks (lowest of his career in a full season)
2013 - 33 walks (on pace to have 60 something walks)

the good news is since there's only 4 more games till the break we might not see maholm again for a while. If he's the fifth man out of the break that's almost two weeks. They could possibly get Beachy back by then and relegate Maholm to ... whatever.

Two main reason:
1-too many outs in the lineup especially with runners on. Pitchers work to those spots to get out of jams
2-too many free swingers in the lineup. Like Chipper said it seems like we have too many hitters trying to hit over the wall instead of through it.

How does this offense just go dormant like this?!?!

To me the difference between Fredi and Bobby is Bobby wanted to win every game, but if he didn't he took it in stride. Fredi seems to hope to win every game. No fire, no passion, no sense of urgency at any time of a game. If they lose he feels the other team won the game not that the Braves lost it. Don't know if that makes sense.

You take the higher percentage of getting another at-bat. Laird is not it.

I understand that. Say you used McCann instead of Laird and McCann reaches, who do you bat next in the pitcher's spot? Reed Johnson and Paul Janish are the only 2 guys let on the bench. Reed would have to be the pinch-hitter. We know he's not getting a homerun. We can only hope he gets a hit to keep the train moving. Then you're left with the next hitter being Rev. What are the chances of Rev getting a hit to keep the train moving and giving Heyward a chance to do some real damage? So I didn't necessarily have an issue with Fredi not hitting McCann in place of Laird. It was a different situation than that other game that he didn't hit McCann for Laird when McCann would have had the chance to change the outcome of the game with 1 swing.

Reed Johnson has been a pretty solid pinch hitter. It's not flashy, but we do have some pretty quality bench players and even better when Gattis comes back. I'd put our bench down as one of the best in the league.

Again Bourn only got a good cheap deal because he didn't sign until February because his asking price was outrageous. The Braves would have paid him what the Indians did but they couldn't wait until February to know one way or the other.
