We wouldn't be a planet.

I like the last quote though. Considering the Moon does affect our moods and mindsets and such, having a large planet like Jupiter next door would probably make us considerably different people.

Dalyn, I just realized your original posts are actually links to what you were referencing. I didn't know what you were talking about, and didn't want to look like a big dumb dumb in the Science thread. Which is now making me look like a bigger dumb dumb. I shall read/watch those links after work! (Didn't even know who this "TED" guy was.) :stupid:

I see articles that say Antarctica has hit the coldest temperature on record... and of course that gives Climate Change skeptics a huge excuse to mock climate change itself... as if it doesn't exist.

Really wish people understood the science behind it. A big misconception people have of global warming is all 360 degrees of the Earth will warm at the same time, completely ignoring the magnetic poles shifting and the seasons and weather patterns changing.

We've had record heat and drought in recorded history, to go along with record freeze in Antarctica.

The fact people continue to ignore there's a serious problem is scary.

Yep. Especially when we have 6 years of a warming trend, then year 7 is an outlier that reverts back temporarily, then years 8-10 continue years 1-6 but when year 7 happens all the skeptics say "GLOBAL WARMING WHAT?"

It's sad. Very sad.

People's inability to grasp global warming is fairly sad. I'm not an alarmist who thinks we all need a 0 carbon footprint, blah blah blah. But anyone ignoring the data is just wrong. Debating over the degree man has effected it and what's the balance between industry and survival are the debates that should be going on. If you think Global Warming is a myth then you suck at data analysis.

http://jameswight.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/global-average-temperature-1880-2009-with-10-year-moving-average-cropped.jpg

I hope the people who say it's not global warming are right, and it's just natural, because I'd hate to think of the millions (billions?) of people who's lives will be ruined by the sea levels rising a few inches.

All sadly the global warming naysayers have to go on is the arctic glaciers. What they don't realize, is that the arctic would be an ecological disaster, species dying out being displaced, etc. but the reason climatologists are studying the the Antarctic is because if that breaks off we're ****ed. Cause the Antarctic is what will cause sealevels to rise.

The downside of this debate is, the creationists will only say "their beliefs were reinforced and stronger after this debate" because they automatically feel like Nye is on the attack against christianity. Doesn't matter that creationism can be disproved, they're going to go with their "intiution" and never question creationism.

The reality is, I know Nye wanted to rip religion, but he had to be respectful to at least look credible.

That's the problem, if you are a loudmouth preaching the truth, nobody wants to take you serious. If you're polite while doing it, you're "respected" but people don't still take you serious.

Granted Nye shouldn't have been the guy to be debating ham. If a real career scientist was on there, I think they would've ripped Ham into shreds.

Here's some science for you. Did you know in an office setting, you can fundamentally fart without anyone knowing it by farting into the foam of your chair while slowly raising your buttocks up until you're done? What it does is cause a vortex of negative pressure to inherently suck your gas into the foam and keep it held in there loosely. At that point you can no longer sit on said chair because the inertia of your buttocks compressing the foam back down will in turn cause a positive pressure to kinetically release the gas you had meant to trap in the first place to absolute zero. Which will cause a doppler effect in the office for you physics hounds. My scientific recommendation would be to make a linear walk to the water cooler and give your chair time to slowly dissipate it's particles over time.

That is, if time even exists. But we'll get into that in our next lesson.

Just out of curiosity, but how does Hubble get all of the views from space when it's limited to only being at an angle in the Earth's orbit?

goldfly
04-28-2014, 11:47 PM
Hubble zooms around the Earth every 97 minu*tes, so focusing on a target can be difficult. Three onboard systems allow the telescope to remain fixed on an object: gyroscopes, the Fine Guidance Sensors that we talked about in the previous section, and reaction wheels.

The gyroscopes keep track of Hubble's gross movements. Like compasses, they sense its motion, telling the flight computer that Hubble has moved away from the target. The flight computer then calculates how much and in what direction Hubble must move to remain on target.

The flight computer then directs the reaction wheels to move the telescope.

Hubble's Fine Guidance Sensors help keep the telescope fixed on its target by sighting on guide stars. Two of the three sensors find guide stars around the target within their respective fields of view. Once found, they lock onto the guide stars and send information to the flight computer to keep the guide stars within their field of view. The sensors are more sensitive than the gyroscopes, but the combination of gyroscopes and the sensors can keep the HST fixed on a target for hours, despite the telescope's orbital motion.

The HST can't use rocket engines or gas thrusters to steer like most satellites do, because the exhaust gases would hover near the telescope and cloud the surrounding field of view. Instead, the HST has reaction wheels oriented in the three directions of motion (x/y/z or pitch/roll/yaw). The reaction wheels are flywheels, like those found in a clutch. When the HST needs to move, the flight computer tells one or more flywheels which direction to spin in and how fast, which provides the action force. In accordance with Newton's third law of motion (for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction), the HST spins in the opposite direction of the flywheels until it reaches its target.

Thanks but what I mean is, I assume the picture you linked to is just a compilation of many of the hubble's pictures.

How can Hubble see what it looks like outside of our galaxy, facing our galaxy?

Is that just a artists' rendering of what the milk way likely looks like?

goldfly

Dalyn

Hubble is outside the Earth's atmosphere, so it can look away from the plane of our own galaxy (allowing it to see beyond it). But even less powerful telescopes--and our own eyes (Andromeda)--can see outside the galaxy under the right circumstances (look up Charles Messier).

Dalyn
04-30-2014, 11:48 AM
As for knowing what the milky way looks like, we are at a position in the milky way where we can see most of the galaxy. That helps a ton. The rest is a compilation using measurements and pictures (and comparisons) we have of the areas we can see.
