Braves facing the pitcher they were dying to get in the Mark Teixeira deal.

We're breaking tradition here and maybe we can change to horsecrap luck.

ANGELS

1. Calhoun RF
2. Trout CF
3. Pujols 1B
4. Hamilton LF
5. Kendrick 2B
6. Aybar SS
7. Freese 3B
8. Conger C
9. Wilson P

BRAVES

1. Heyward RF
2. BJ Upton CF
3. Freeman 1B
4. J Upton LF
5. Gattis C
6. Johnson 3B
7. La Stella 2B
8. Simmons SS
9. Harang P

Poor LaStella. Coors gave CJ more life so Fredi won't be moving TLS up anytime soon.

It's not luck when you trot out BJ Upton and bat him second everyday.

I know I will get slammed for this but I'd try:

LaStella
Johnson
Heyward
Freeman
Upton
Gattis
Upton
Simmons

for a while and see what happens.

It's probably quibbling, but with that 6-9 (counting the pitcher), you'd have the Three Stooges (plus Shemp) after Freeman. I don't know how much line-up construction matters in a line-up with this many holes. Maybe it calls for more possible synergy, which would validate your changes. But it would put a ton of pressure on the upper part of the line-up to never fall short when a productive opportunity arose. I'm open to anything at this point.

I want him up there as well but in the long run its probably good not to put too much pressure on him. Come mid July I bet he is in the 2 hole. But that would also require Freeman being moved down. Its a shame that he is a lefty as well.

I posted it in the Extend Gattis thread. He has improved that vision dramatically thus far this year. This guy has limited professional experience. We can't look at his potential improvement as what would a normal 27 year old improve arc be. This is a guy who has the equivalent of a 21/22 year worth of professional experience. Sky is the limit for him. Seasons with a 950+ OPS are not outlandish to say. Not likely but it wouldn't shock me for Gattis to post some lines like this:

290/360/600 40+HR/100+RBI

gattis appear to have much better pitch recognition. his d is back up to solid.

Why extend him? We have team control until he's like 32. We don't want a 32+ y/o Gattis.

The Braves seem to really value cost certainty. And the Braves seem to really think Arb money and overall salaries are going way up (only reason for CJ contract). So maybe you try to lock him up through his arb years + a team option.

I think it would need to be VERY team friendly. But the HRs are sexy and might drive up his arb numbers.

I still think he's a below avg catcher but won't kill you back there. Still think he's a 250, 300 on base, 30 hr type guy. That's valuable but he's also a catcher and who knows how he holds up.

gattis hitting 275+ would be amazing. He'd be a house hold guy and a top 3 catcher. He'd essentially be Mike Piazza in the non steriod era context.

What I am noticing since the beginning of the season, he is incremently learning not to swing at bad pitches. Every game it seems to get better and better, laying off right off the bat, looking for "his" pitch. He absolutely murdered that homer tonight, not his normal 460 footers that are high into the night. He hit one of those JHey's line drive homers when he first came up (please go back there JHey).

We gotta cool the expectations on Gattis a bit. I like the guy a lot. Power is for real. But he cannot be a high avg or obp guy, that's unrealistic. He's actually swinging and missing more than he did last year. And his line drive rate is one of the lowest.

He's a .250 guy with a low obp and tons of power. Good player.

I always feel bad for guys in Ibanez's position in the ninth inning. Raul's been around forever. He's a smart guy. How quickly into that at-bat do you think he realized that he just had no shot at all? After the 0-1 slider that bounced before it reached the plate and at which he still swung? Even before he stepped into the plate? It's got to be an awful feeling standing in there thinking, "There is literally nothing I can do to hit this guy."

He does. It goes out and through. The only way pitchers can really handcuff him is come in on him. I wish he can get tips from CJ on keeping his hands in, but the downside is he will lose some bat speed in the process.

I rather have a healthy 15 to 22 homer JHey than a Bob Horner 2.0 105 game injury prone JHey.

He's a diver. And a full rotator. Most importantly, the way to get him out is on his hands. Without reconstructing his swing, I think it always will be. He opened up his stance about six weeks ago; that was the important thing.
