Rome snatches defeat from the jaws of victory yet again. I'm too lazy to look it up, but I wonder how many blown saves that bullpen has.

I think your note about the fact we started four Indy league pitchers tonight says a ton about the spottiness of our pitching development in recent years. We've had some high profile successes in the early rounds, but our depth--at least in terms of quality--is pretty tepid right now.

The issue has been the fact that so many of the pitchers we took in 2012-2013 have not even developed into competent organizational filler let alone real prospects. Along with injuries this has forced us to scrounge around the indy leagues and waiver wires.

The 2010-2011 drafts were strong and really gave a big boost to our organizational depth and we're benefiting from that in AA and AAA. But the 2012-2013 drafts have not produced the same kind of depth and this is reflected at the moment in Rome and Lynchburg. Also there is a bit of the "bifurcated" issue with respect to the 2012-2013 drafts where a small number of the players taken have moved very fast (Wood, Shae Simmons, Hursh, Wren) and no longer part of the picture for our A ball teams.

The rule I go by is one out of ten pitching prospects in Rookie ball make it, one out of five in Low A, one out of 4 in High A, one out of 3 in AA and one out of 2 in AAA. It is just a rough rule but yeah we are way under what we want in Rome. Ideally, you want all five of your starting pitchers in Rome to be bona fide prospects because on average only one out of those five are going to pan out.

Next year looks a bit better for Rome. They could have a rotation of Grosser, Fulenchek, Povse, Sobotka and Salazar. Plus Luis Miranda, who has been very good in Danville pitching out of the pen at age 19. And maybe some of the injured guys like Merejo could come back and pitch in Rome next year.
