I came in 2nd on my interview. I wanted this position so bady that even brought in my code to prove I had the skills. For the first time the hiring manager and director actually got back to me which is unheard of.

In the second interview the hiring manager ask this question and I preface the answer of if I answered it I would sound cocky. I try to answer it in the best way I could without sounding cocky.

I actually got to the 3rd interview because of my skillset and this is a SR position and about a 40% pay raise plus I was allow to bring my programming code in and explain it to them.

I got my code out, explain in detail what it does and she impressed but she asked this question and I didn't want to sound cocky. She ask, if you think SAS is better platform than a SQL backend, why didn't you force management to change since you are only one in the department that does it. I told her, I don't make the call and they are skimpy on wanting change and costs involve.

I didn't know that was a deal breaker. She hinted she wanting someone cocky (I am cocky you all know that) but I always thought the customer was right (wrong, you force the customer to acquiesce to you is their mentality).

She said my programming skills far exceed any of their applicants, well in the case only two made it this far. The other guy was a hardass with passable skills and she told me she wanted someone that will break some balls to get things done and she didn't see it in me. I was like WTF, I was taught in interviews to be a people person. I thought I would be part of a team of nerds slamming out code, not push people around.

Then this is the kicker. I am going to recommend you to another department we are not going to let someone of your skills out of our sight if you still interested.

Wife says the job I have is killing me slowly. No vacation more than 2 days, long hours (5:45 to make sure data is transferred or I am screwed for the day) and then work till 5 pm and Fridays are the worst.

I thought I iced the interview, but I have to give the manager credit she weighed us for two days and decide the guy who can be a dick is better than a person who would try to work with you. There still is a chance (please no Dumb and Dumber reference) that the guy comes back with bad credit, a record, or lies about his degree. They had all mine sitting front of their face.

Anyone ever gone to an interview and thought they knocked it out of the park and then found out you came in second?

IT SUCKS!!

It's a stretch to believe that you couldn't be a ball breaker. ;-)

Hope it breaks your way.

The conventional wisdom on interviews is misleading. The most important thing is to make an impression on the person that is interviewing you.

Now you tell me. I told my dad and he said times had change, you don't suck up to anyone anymore being nice and all, you just break their balls and be a bad ass.

Well, they are recommending me to HQ as a lead programmer, which is more money, odd I say. But hey, I am going to submit since the manager has saw my skill and will vouch for me. I sent my work to my cousin in Birmingham and he said he has some peeps at McKesson that is interested, so I have a few avenues opening but I refuse to move, I got it good here.

Yeah, I created the YNOT using my skills but I abandoned it because it dwindled. I am not going to input data on 8 people, not worth it.

Yeah, but to be fair a big black man who can program will already make an impression haha.

I usually go into my interviews with a swagger more than anything else. I'm not a person that's easily forgotten so I just go in there with the idea that the job is mine. I ask weird questions, so on so forth. Hasn't really failed me miserably. I went into one interview not like it cause it was for what I can only call my dream job right now (customer service that pays like sales) and it let me down.

I don't necessarily agree with Zito saying its a dream job but I do like customer service and he is saying that it pays like a sales job.

I wouldn't necessarily go into that much of an extreme. But the quiet confidence isn't always the way to go. I find it more often than not is the inflection of your voice. If you speak in a powerful way then people listen.

You should have brought her a copy of all the dickhead moves you made as a mod on the Scout board. That really would've got her all hot and bothered.

Who the hell expects computer programmers to come in being cocky anyway? Sounds like this lady is looking for a stud programmer to come in and rock her world. You need to call her up and let her know that you might be black but you're white where it counts. If you have trouble saying it in a cocky manner, watch Cool As Ice starring Vanilla Ice and just do what he does. I think there will be a good chance that other guy's record comes back rejected.

Well my real dream job is head brewer but I'm years from that. But if I coud sit on my ass, answer questions and get paid 50-60K to start doing it? That makes me drool a little

AA: GOOD Morning, sir. How may my BIG, loveable and intelligent self impress you today?

Customer: Uh…. well…

AA: Let me stop you right there. You’re probably surprised to see a Bla-- I mean, an Af-foREE-Ameri-CAN in a job like this.

Customer: What?

AA: You know they wanted me to run the whole company.

C: They did?

AA: That’s right, but I said, “No siree, can’t do it. The customers need my expertise and selfless devotion.”

C: That’s nice.

AA: By the way, I played a little pro ball in Europe.

C: Huh?

AA: Sure did.

C: Okay. Well, here’s my receipt. Looks like a mixup on the order.

AA: Let ol’ AA take a look at that. … uh huh…uh huh. I see where YOU screwed up.

C: Pardon me.

AA: Yep! But don’t worry. Lot a folks do that.

C: They do?

Sadly, its the result of being in corporate america and some customer service jobs early in my life. Some good things come of it but I'm still a slave. Hopefully in a few years I will get to call the shots.

It's really simply about performance. I'm a business manager now and am managing 5 people now and I'm only 24. I started as a client specialist 2 years ago but got two contracts signed with AMZ and Home Depot that brought in millions. If you bring in far more money then they are paying you, they will take notice.

I'm glad you have seen success early in your life. Unfortunately, not everyone knows what they have to do at an early age. Takes others a few more years to figure it out.

Good your company gave you a shot to advance but in the end it really isn't just simply about performance. Performance gets you far but it doesn't get you to the top. Who you know is more important.

To a degree yes, but humans are pack animals by nature, so you're more inclined to give someone a promotion based on skills if you have a clear differentiator. If things are close you always go to your friends, family, long time co-workers, etc.

There definitely is a "good ol boys" club in my company - all seem to have high power job... Luckily a few of them are braves fans :)

My owner of my company is actually part owner of the Nats - and we have box suite seats to every game... It's actually a pretty awesome perk and when I'm able to get some tickets its really an easy to way to network with the higher ups.

My brother said that my current company is abusing me. I already went to the doc with a heart attack because I am miserable, I work too much and stress, to be honest, these boards gets me through the day. My doc said at my current salary I am being f*cked over and this area is terrible for what I do. She suggested that I move, but I can't. Okie has my facebook account, knows my family and what I have as in house and family, yeah go ahead and pm him, he would say I am black, my wife is pretty and my kid are gorgeous and I haven't been pulling you all legs for 10 years. I live in a great place as my kids love to drive their mechanize atv's in the yard. I can't give this up for the cities. I turned down several more high paying jobs but they want me to relocate but don't want to pay the Real Estate fees. Starbucks, which my brother is the VP of his facility, is willing to pay me $160k to take over their IT department. I asked my wife and the look she gave me was..hell no, I am not moving to California. You see it is not that I can't get the job I want, there is too many factors in the decision and that is why I am upset. A prime job in my city that pays Minneapolis rates was for the taking and since I am nice person I didn't get the job. I know now that I have to be dick in an interview from now on in Fortune 20 companies.

Still hoping the other candidate that beat me his rap sheet show some blemishes.

My brother said that my current company is abusing me.
Not being paid top dollar is not exactly "abuse" nor uncommon.

I already went to the doc with a heart attack because I am miserable
It was clever of you to see a doc with a heart attack, but I doubt being miserable caused it.

My doc said at my current salary I am being f*cked over
Boy, I'll bet that made your heart feel better.

She suggested that I move
Is she a real doctor?

Okie has my facebook account, knows my family and what I have as in house and family, yeah go ahead and pm him, he would say I am black, my wife is pretty and my kid are gorgeous and I haven't been pulling you all legs for 10 years. I live in a great place as my kids love to drive their mechanize atv's in the yard. I can't give this up for the cities.
That does sound miserable.

I turned down several more high paying jobs but they want me to relocate but don't want to pay the Real Estate fees.
It's a wonder you aren't dead yet.

Starbucks, which my brother is the VP of his facility
What is a Starbucks facility?

... is willing to pay me $160k to take over their IT department. I asked my wife and the look she gave me was..hell no, I am not moving to California.
There must not be enought computer programmers in California. Btw, I thought Starbucks was based in Seattle?

You see it is not that I can't get the job I want, there is too many factors in the decision and that is why I am upset.
So you went to see your doctor with a heart attack because life decisions are complex. I think I know why she wants you to move.

A prime job in my city that pays Minneapolis rates was for the taking and since I am nice person I didn't get the job.
I guess nice guys really do finish last.

I know now that I have to be dick in an interview from now on in Fortune 20 companies.
Who's Dick?

Still hoping the other candidate that beat me his rap sheet show some blemishes.
You may get the job yet. There's nothing worse than a rap sheet full of blemishes.

I wouldn't call it "not being a pussy" but I was always told, you have to act as if the company has to sell themselves to YOU as well. As if you're interviewing them for what they have to offer you and your career. And to always get a long with them, so I'm not what's wrong with coming across as a good, nice guy in an interview so i dunno what they were looking for.

At least the hiring manager called my recruiter and said I had skillz and as a company would try to find something for me because did not want to lose me. Ah no thanks after I heard I didn't get the job because I wasn't serious enough. Heck, I never wore a freaking suit to any interview in my life and they wanted to see that. It was 100 effing degrees outside and where am I going to change at work (giant ass neon side that AA is leaving here for another position because he is wearing something he has never wore before)? Before you ask, I do not live in town so I couldn't go home and change and go to the interview in the 1:30 I had.

At least McKesson has my work, hopefully it is enough to work out of Minneapolis. We shall see.

That's what you get for not wearing a suit to work every day. You're not maximizing your potential for ass kicking.
