Four-year deal includes club option for 2019


ATLANTA, Ga. - The Atlanta Braves have agreed to terms with Cuban free-agent outfielder Dian Toscano on a four-year Major League contract through 2018, with a fifth-year club option for 2019. The deal was formally confirmed by Major League Baseball today and financial terms were not announced.

Toscano, 25, hit .356 with a .440 on-base percentage and a .452 slugging percentage during the 2012-13 season, when he played for Villa Clara in Cuba's Serie Nacional, considered the premier league in Cuba. He stands 5-foot-10 and bats left-handed.
"We are very excited to come to terms with a player of Dian's ability," said John Hart, Braves' president of baseball operations. "As we look to add depth to our organization, the international market is very important to us and expanding our search into Cuba is a significant step."
To make room for Toscano on the 40-man roster, the Braves have designated outfielder Jose Constanza for assignment.

Clay Davenport from BP has a translation system for Cuban players that guesstimates their MLB stats. Toscano's 2015 projection is rather depressing: 238 / 304 / 319. The projection has Toscano peaking in 2017 at 246 / 311 / 344.

It doesn't show future projections for guys who haven't signed in MLB yet, but here's how he translates Hector Olivera's 2014 numbers: 254 / 302 / 390. And here's Andy Ibanez for 2014: 289 / 336 / 461.

The funny thing is, Constanza got hits in his only 2 AB's in the playoffs for us. A 3B against the Cardinals when we were trying to mount a comeback and a clutch RBI single against the Dodgers.

Probably a 4th OFer that can handle CF despite a pretty weak arm. He might be able to take some time away from BJ if/when he continues to be terrible. He is certainly not a long term answer for the OF though.

Not sure why they decided to sign BJ's backup to a 4 year deal plus an option, but oh well.
