The non-Shelley sonnet entitled Ozymandias, written by Horace Smith in friendly competition with Shelley. While perhaps not the virtuosic fourteen-line masterpiece that Shelley scrawled, I think it's pretty damn good in its own right:

In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:—
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand."— The City's gone,—
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.

We wonder,—and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in chace,
He meets some fragment huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Do you mean the Victory blonde? If so, I guess I should sample it again; I've only tried it once, and while I didn't think it was at all bad I also wasn't crazy about it. For lighter Victory-brewed beers, Prima Pils is my jam; a great summer beer for all seasons, it has a nice hop-balance that I find imparts subtle notes of cannabis.

Unfortunately I mashed high, so I think the body will be off and it may be a tinge more hoppy. I wanted to use all the hops I purchased so I'm using a lot to dry hop. In the end it will be a more hoppy nose and full bodied. Early indications are it's gonna be good, won't know until it's fully primed.

In reality there are only 2 different type of beers, ales and lagers. Ales use top fermenting warmer yeasts, Lager's use bottom fermenting cooler yeasts. Though there are some blendings.

Old Overholt rye whiskey. Usually retails for $15 a bottle and compares extremely favorably to pricier (and still excellent) ryes like Templeton, Whistle Pig, Rittenhouse, et cetera, while being far superior to comparably-priced offerings such as Jim Beam rye.

A selection of Stanley Kubrick's Titles in search of a script (c/o his long-time assistant, Tony Frewin):

I MARRIED AN ARMENIAN
(Said matter-of-factly to us by a woman publicist. Stanley thought it a great title for a 1940s-style Warner Bros. musical.)

ONLY MINISTERS OF THE THIRD REICH MAY USE GREEN INK
(Stanley read somewhere that this was, in fact, true. He thought it would make a great art house double bill with Wim Wender’s 1971 film, The Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick.)

OSMIROID AND OBLIVION
OTHER BARRELS, OTHER NIBS
(Two art house films about European writers. Lots of sensitivity, lots of angst. Osmiroid made some of Stanley’s favourite fountain pens. Oskar Werner in the lead?)

ONE BAG, ONE NOTEBOOK
(Art house angst, Oskar Werner again.)

THE WIZARD OF AUSCHWITZ
(A concentration camp film with a feel-good ending.)

AUSCHWITZ AND ME!
(A musical. The follow-up to Springtime for Hitler?)

Click here (http://cinephilearchive.tumblr.com/post/40346319747/over-the-course-of-the-34-years-they-worked) for more (I left off a few gems), along with additional context.

In general it's wonderful. You can buy it online for really not a bad price (12 packages for 40 bucks plus shipping)

And you can get scrapple, an awesome thing that's hard to describe. ANd one Philly area treat I can get up here thanks to the long arm of Albertson's market.

I'm glad they rolled out those 32s of Sucks: damn great option when you want a couple pints but don't feel like lugging a whole six-pack where you're going.

Hmmm, I dont know if I've seen them in 32s, I've picked up a 6er recently when I needed an IPA. I'm glad even though I'm in the middle of nowhere I can still get Lagunitas Sucks and FSW Double Jack. Sadly no Wookey Jack.

Hopefully later this month I'll be on my way to NJ to taste the IPA I brewed over christmas. It's a lil funky from what my brother said, like kind of a BPA

I only started seeing them in Chicago a few months ago; apparently they're only available in certain markets, and I wouldn't be surprised if they're available here now on account of Lagunitas just opening a second brew-works in the Pilsen neighborhood—which is, felicitously, on my side of town. Now they just need to get the pub component up and running.

Mother-****ing Hot Doug's (http://hotdougs.com/specials.htm), the best encased-meat emporium you're going to find, and an absolute Chicago institution that is sadly closing its doors 3 October 2014 (http://www.dnainfo.com/chicago/20140506/avondale/hot-dougs-closing-permanently-october-3-its-time-do-something-else).

A really, really fantastic film, with a great narrative treatment by Altman, tremendous atmosphere provided by Altman and Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography, and a soundtrack penned and recorded by the inimitable Leonard Cohen. I saw it a few years ago—a mediocre .avi download screened on a large tv—but I had the opportunity to catch it screened last night from a pretty well-preserved 35mm print.

I"ve heard of 2 ways. First is adding when you are heating your mash. Second and more common is to put in a cheesecloth or muslin bag or paint straining bag so you can rack it off with less issues.

I spent several months in Croatia (Zagreb/Split/Hvar/Brac) earlier this year. One of Europe's remaining hidden gems, for sure. Did you take the ferry over from Italy, or are you working your way down the Dalmatian?

The aerial shot wasn't mine: just a brief place-holder while I started combing through photographs I actually took (like the two above, also of Pula and its environs).

I'm (sadly) back in the US now, but Istria was pretty much the fulcrum of my journeys: the culmination of two weeks moving down central Europe (about a week—after a day's stop in Utrecht—in Danish lands (mostly Copenhagen), German Hansa, and Brandenburg, then another week in Bohemia and Pannonia) and the gateway into the next two-and-a-half weeks (northern Italy—Veneto and Emilia-Romagna, primarily, with pit-stops in Lombardy and Liguria—and Provence). So, I actually took the ferry out of Istria, retracing (to a degree) Gustave Aschenbach (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustave_von_Aschenbach)'s route to the Fallen Queen of the Seas. Reaching Istria by rail—as we did—is in fact much more complicated than ferries: after a night in Ljubjlana (a pretty wonderfully-quaint capital city, just out of the Alps on the edge of a marsh-plain) we trained back up into the mountains, towards Trieste and Slovenia's narrow band of Adriatic shore, before switching to a two-car train in the little junction of Hrpelje Kozina—a morning train that is the only train of the day from that direction into Istria (there's also a once-daily train from the east out of Rijeka), and which literally sat on the tracks for well over two hours past its scheduled departure-time, waiting for our delayed train from Ljubjlana to arrive.

Last is one I can't really link to is Hill Farmstead, former Ratebeer best brewery in the world, last year rated number 2. Yeah, they're that good, their IIPA named Abner is a treat. It's every bit as amazing as Heady Topper, Sculpin, Pliny, or any other of the great IIPAs.

This is going to be a long post about my weekend back at home. No pictures. Just a lengthy post.

To start things off, on the trip down I planned a minor detour from the GSP to the Garden State Plaza in Paramus. There was a specific reason for this. It was to get Shake Shack. Got myself a burger, cheese fries, girlfriend got a hotdog, regular fries and shakes. So I'll discuss it from worst to best. Fries are mediocre. Cooked very well, but crinkle cut, so crunchy, but it's pressed potatoes. So eh. I wish they did fresh cut fries like Five Guys. Next up the shakes, it was fantastic. Absolutely rocked. The cheese sauce was exceptional. But the BUrger. Holy Crap the burger. It was juicy on a potato roll, great ratio of toppings, high quality bacon. Just a fantastic burger.

The mall though, super big and it was jam packed, we were there at like 2 on a Friday which given a bunch of schools were still closed from the snow the day before, I'm guessing it was busier than normal as the roads weren't terrible, I'm guessing they wanted more time to work on them. Anyway, you know you're in a rich person mall when for starters, you see like a 10-1 white to minority shopper ratio, you see things like lululemon, Nordstrom, and many more. I was excited there was a lego store, the girlfriend wouldn't let me walk in

Anyway on to what I usually talk about, the food. First night had local pizza, I love it. We went to Fridays for the bar that night, I wasn't in favor of it but the girlfriend wanted it. Next day started out with bagels, I posted the place on here before, BOrdentown Bagels. They have this thing called the Bordentown Bagel Buster, it's a bagel with Porkroll, Bacon, Sausage, hashbrown and cheese. It was heavenly, great for both hangovers and prepping for day drinking. Lunch I did that at Philly beerfest, I'll discuss that later. Dinner I had a cheesesteak from my favorite local pizzeria, my girlfriend got Tortellini in Alfredo, it was great. Next day, diner for breakfast. Nothing beats a diner breakfast. It's fast and delicious. I had a Porkroll Egg and Cheese sandwich. Then we went out for lunch at 10th Ave Burrito Co. I've talked about it on here, but ther'es not enough great things you can say about the place. Often times when a place gets popular, their quality slips, their quality hasn't slipped despite 2 expansions and always being packed. Got my classic pork mole burrito with chipotle cream sauce, it's maybe the best thing I ate all year. After that it's largely road travelling, did get to Potatopia, super good.

Anyway to Philly Beer Fest. I have to preface by saying from like 2009 til either 2012 or 13 I went there every year. I stopped when I went to other beer fests. This year I lost my go to beerfest in Mt. Holly so I brought Philly back into the mix. Compared to years past it was way way way way better. First things it was laid out better than any year in the past opting to move breweries to the outer edge, having a clearing in the middle for people to get air, smoke, whatever, they had enough bathrooms (common issue in the past for them). The Brewery selection was quality. Having local breweries to Philly, as well as breweries from all around. From my general impressions, Sam Adams didn't fare well compared to their craft counter parts. They had the most beers on tap with IIRC 4 Sam beers and 2 Angry Orchards. Most had 2, some had 3. Only Long Trail I believe had 4. And it was a true disappointment across the group. Hits include Starr Hill, Lagunitas, Carton, Victory, Flying Fish, Troegs, Anderson Valley, Ballast Point, Ship Yard, and DC Brau. Though only a few breweries were misses, Sam being the biggest. Food there though. Holy crap the food trucks. Girlfriend was hell bent on getting pizza. It was OK. We hit up 4 other food trucks and shared with my siblings and their significant others. First was a mac and cheese truck, they rocked, great toppings, solid mac and cheese, but making flavored Mac, the flavors have to be on point, they were. Second was a sandwich truck where we got a delicious pork roll sandwich. Next up was the cheese curd truck, where we went back to, they made great fried cheese curds and sauces. Then last was a peanut butter truck, got a super nice sandwich, great bread and great flavor combinations (PB, grape jelly, cream cheese, and bacon) overall left very happy. Though sadly we missed out on our great idea for food after cause everything in South Jersey had a 1+ hour wait.

I'm gonna aggravatingly pimp myself for a second. About 3 years ago my brother and I brewed a Belgian strong ale. It's kidn of between a light and a dark on the srm scale. CLoser to light though. Anyway, I have been aging some bottles to see how the recipe ages. And it's amazing. It's agressive on th enose with classic belgian yeast flavors of banana and clove. It's sweet but a bit dry on the pallet. It was my first home brew recipe and it's certainly a winner.

My original recipe was a partial mash (meaning grains and malt extract) my updated recipe is gonna be all grain. I want to make 3 batches. One with a brett yeast, one with a belgian yeast, and one with a blend of the 2. But I need a day where tha'ts the only thing on my agenda as that's something like 12 hours worth of brewing. But the experimental results alone will be well worth it.

Oh and unrelated to me. Smugglers notch distillery is pretty boss. WEnt there in Waterbury last week, had their bourbon, rum and vodka as well as a hopped gin. I don't like gin so the last one wasn't for me. But the rum, bourbon and vodka were all great. Vodka is dangerous, it has almost no bite to it. Very clean. Bourbon is a very nice sweet but spicy bourbon, and the rum was really smooth but it was aged for a few years in bourbon barrels so it had a bit of peppery bourbon bite to it which was nic.e
