I just LOL at how many 1st round draft picks that team will have this season. I think I read there were 7 on Chad Ford's pre-season Big Board. I honestly believe Calipari will go on a Saban like run in college basketball if he stays in college long enough. Dude has it figured out, thought it was a great hire initially and now it looks like a legacy like hire for the AD there.

It remains to be seen whether UK will have someone the caliber of MKG or Anthony Davis but the one thing I do know is that they've certainly got plenty of talent to make up for not having one of those superstar caliber players. As Calipari has shown before, age is just a number. If I have a choice between a good upperclassman and a great freshman, I'd rather have the great freshman any day of the week.

Cal gets his teams to play defense and play unselfishly, I see no reason why he won't be able to do that again.

The NCAA can be hypocritical scumbags at times. http://hamptonroads.com/2013/08/odu-player-hills-eligibility-appeal-denied

This is one of the best student athletes in the county (at least academically). He's a team captain, just embodies what college athletics is designed to be about.

He goes to Clemson and as a freshman plays in 23 games.

As a soph he plays 8 mins in a closed door scrimmage at the beginning of the year and decides he wants to go back home and be with his family. (No medical hardship sent)

He then transferred that year to ODU and sat out

The kid then played 2 seasons at ODU.

But, the NCAA ruled his 8 mins scrimmage counts as a full year of eligibility despite granting a player at Notre Dame in a similar situation another year.

If it was UNC, I'm sure the player would get the extra year. (which by the way I called Hairston playing this year)

I'll take Harrison over Smart.

The other Harrison might not be the best SG, but he's in the top 3-4.

I'd take WCS over any other big in the country next year.

Regardless, maybe not best in the country, but they'll have guys who are in the conversation at 3 or 4 positions. Might be more accurate to say that they'll have a top-5 player at each position, which is just as crazy.

Absolutely agree. It is amazing how the NCAA selectively enforces their rules. I really think between this and the growing tide of resentment over the fact that they profit off the backs of their players, but those same players can't even buy their own jersey, the NCAA's days are numbered.

Kentucky is going to be stupid this year. 40-0 is a little ridiculous... but if they don't lose early (and they might lose their second game), I don't know who is going to beat them.

7 NBA players.. in the freshman class. 2 more on the roster. James Young is the fourth-highest rated recruit on the team, and he might be the best offensive player. Julius Randle is just a freak of nature. He's not as good as Lebron was at this stage, obviously, but Lebron is the only comparison I can think of for someone who moves like that with that body. Friday could be the most important day in Illinois Basketball since the 2005 National Championship Game. Cliff Alexander, a 2014 big man from Chicago, is set to decide between Kansas, Illinois and couple other schools (by all accounts, it is down to the first 2). He is rated as a top 5 player in his class and would most likely be a one and done player. However, his commitment to Illinois would mean so much more than his one year of playing for the team. It would show that Illinois is an option for the top Chicago kids (generally the top kids in the nation too - Chicago produces unreal talent each and every year). I've seen far too many top players leave the state, and while they have every right to do so, it would be nice to see somebody step up and be THE MAN at the state university. Cliff has that chance.

The 2014 Illini should be very good, even without the addition of Cliff - but, throw him in the mix and we are talking legit National Championship Contender. I cannot wait for Friday to get here. John Groce has been exactly what this program needed and he is starting to build an Illinois program that is going to be competing for B1G titles and Final Fours year in and year out.

Could not have played worse in the first half. Harrison twins were beyond awful the entire game. Literally handed them 20+ points. Michigan State hit everything.. including a lay-ip that was pinned to the glass. Looked like we had never played basketball before for the first 5 minutes. Could not make a free throw.

And still almost won. I'm not worried. As I'm sure none of you recall, I predicted Kentucky would lose this game.

The refs weren't trying to give Kentucky the game, they are calling more fouls due to the emphasis on the rules. Most games are now 2.5 hour parades to the foul line.

Kentucky is good no doubt, but they aren't the "they got the talent to go undefeated" good. They were really piss poor outside of Randle. Right now CBB is all about staying out of foul trouble, if Payne stays out of foul trouble, I think Mich State wins a lot easier.

These kids better start learning how to defend without fouling or they need to just let them score. Several games were affected by the ticky tack fouls; does anyone really enjoy watching a game with 70 free throws?

People were complaining about how restrictive defenses have gotten. Look at teams like Louisville and VCU who were allowed to grab players driving to the basket with no foul calls. In theory, this should allow a more free flowing game with offensive players actually allowed to play basketball. But, kids haven't adjusted yet and are just fouling at insane rates.

UC Irvine had 48 field goal attempts last night and 40 free throw attempts.

Ohilo had 5 guys foul out.

CK86
11-13-2013, 11:08 AM
Kansas was just the better team last night. They weathered the early foul trouble to Wiggins, hung in there and then executed at the free throw line all night. Duke did better than I expected for 38 minutes, the last 2 minutes were kind of an aberration.

I don't know how you play defense though with these new rules. Last night was unwatchable, the only reason I stayed tuned in was the team I root for was playing. It was a parade of free throws, there was no flow to the game and by the end it came down to who had more players left able to play. If you barely touch the offensive player, it's now a foul. It's just dumb as hell.

I can't wait for the new block/charge rule to start getting showcased too. You can literally go all LeBron James on someone (i.e. run like a freight train into guys) and it's a guaranteed foul. The defensive player has to be set at all times. It's going to be an even bigger mess when teams start figuring out there's literally no charging anymore unless you use your off-hand.

gilesfan
11-13-2013, 11:12 AM
You play defense with your feet instead of your hands, thats how you avoid fouling. You are allowed to touch the offensive player, just not with two hands and you cant continuously hand check. I think its slightly too strict, but kids are going to have to adjust.

The block/charge is great though. I love that Duke players can't sneak under a player driving to the hoop and flop for a charge. It never made sense to me how a player could be going up in the air and have a player slide under him and the call be a charge.

CK86

No doubt that Duke exploited the block/charge rule in the past, agree 100% on that. I'm just saying if there's never a threat for a charge due to the new rules, you can steamroll people over and it won't be an offensive foul. It hurts the defense way more than the offense and combined with the hand check rules, it's a hell of a lot tougher to play defense.

Sadly Kansas, Kentucky and Michigan State are all really ad matchups against Duke. Any team with lots of quality bigs or rebounders are going to give Duke trouble. I haven't seen Louisville play yet but I imagine they'll be an awful matchup too. Duke has a very good to great collection of wing players but no big guys at all to compliment them. That's why I don't expect a deep run this year unless Parker magically starts getting 15 rebounds a game.

With that being said, at least they'll be entertaining to watch because all the games will be high scoring. No defense and no rebounding means a lot of close, high scoring games.

And if the refs actually call the fouls like they say they will, Louisville's brand of ugly-as-sin, foul-you-so-many-times-they-can't-call-them-all will just not work anymore. If this happened at Kentucky, somehow I feel like most people's attitudes would be a little different.

Mine wouldn't be different at all, I'm not delusional and I know it happens at a lot of places.

Really bad loss for them. UNC is not a great team. Roy coached circles around Rick, though.

I'm not sure MSU is all that good, unfortunately. That's not taking anything away from UNC.. if anything it's taking away from UK. Outside of the first half of the UK game they really haven't been that impressive. Then again, it is an Izzo team, so I'm sure they'll be great by the end of the year.

UK/UNC Saturday

Could see this going either way. We can actually match UNC's size inside, which will help us. I think the key is whether or not our lazy freshmen decide they want to get back and play transition defense. If we let Meeks fire halfcourt outlet passes all game, and UNC gets lots of points off transition lay-ups, it's going to be painful. But if we slow them down and Andrew Harrison can actually figure out how to keep an opposing guard in front of him, I think UK will pull it out.

Both teams need the victory, but Kentucky really needs it. If we don't beat UNC or Louisville, then our only quality non-conference wins will be Boise State and Belmont (though that's not a guaranteed victory either). Should be interesting.

Glad to get the win but it wasn't all that fun to watch. I hate games with that many fouls called.

Hope we can get PJ Hariston and Leslie McDonald back soon.....we really need them. We have no outside shooting right now other than Paige. You could see Kentucky try to take him out of the game in the 1st half and it worked for the most part. He's a great player so you can't shut him down completely but it would be nice if he had some help.

Was a good win for UNC. They're definitely better than I thought. Kentucky has tons of individual talent, and has all the right pieces, but they just have no idea how to play as a team. And it's no given that they'll ever get there. If Randle plays like that, though, Kentucky has no shot against almost anybody. What a horrid performance from him. He's not selfish.. he just has no idea how to be part of a team yet.

And yeah, won't blame the refs, although they were hilarious in the first half. I think Cal's technical made them even it up a bit in the second though, and Kentucky was tied or ahead at some point there. Bad/dumb passing and bad defense is what cost UK the game.

this is what happens when you switch every ball screen.
