54 consecutive at-bats without a strikeout for #Braves Simmons, who last K'd in his first AB of the last game before All-Star break.

Interesting stat:

Simmons getting a rest via the All-Star break probably helped him too. He doesn't get hardly any off days given our poor back-up options. Plus you need him in there to protect Uggla and CJ on defense. No one else can do that like he can.

Completely unreal how many calls umps miss. It seems like they get worse and worse every year. Yet nothing is done. I honestly think if MLB wanted to generate more revenue they could fire all the umps and go on the honor system. They'd save money and we'd at worse end up with the same results. Ridiculous.

Braves1976
07-31-2013, 06:43 PM
That terrible call ruined the whole inning, stole a run and RBI from Simmons. Plus Simmons was at second and Heyward coming up next if not for it. That crap could cost us this game. That is worse than call against Boston that cost them against Tampa Bay recently.

The camera angles and slow motion technology that is being used today warrants some additional extended replays. Why not limit the number of requests that can be made by each team's manager and if a decision is not overturned then it will cost the team challenging the call an out. With the guys in the booth instantly looking at the play then the majority of calls would be overturned if challenged and thereby getting the play called correctly which is what all the fans want.

Overpaid compared to what though? The market sets the value and we paid it. If he has a typical BJ year(s) his contract would of paid for itself.

No one else made an offer close to ours, Philly's offer was a lot less according to reports.

Your point is that BJ was overpaid. Based on typical production he was actually UNDERPAID. Of course you can not like that he got the contract and that I would understand but to say that he was overpaid is simply false. He got a typical market value contract because contracts are handed out based on future market value. Again hindsight says the first year is going to be an over payment. The next 4 years can easily be and underpayment.

Again, we can make the same argument based on Uggla's contract. Would you also defend it? Just trying to see how consistent you'll be here. Further, my point regarding the free agent market isn't less valid. BJ didn't have offers anywhere near ours, so Wren basically bid against himself just like he has in the past (namely the Lowe signing). In fact, Wren's arguments for doing so for Lowe and BJ were basically the same. I am not saying this to bash Wren, I just don't see this as one of his strengths (Wren is much better at trades, etc).

Why wouldn't I defend it? If Uggla has typical Uggla years his contract is fine. You can't say a GM shouldn't sign a guy after the player gets signed and fails to play like he's capable of. It happens. Unless you can tell the future it's something all GM's experience. You can say he bid against himself but at the end of the day it was a perfectly fine contract and wasn't close to an overpay unless you knew exactly that BJ was going to struggle so much.

Fun fact about Dan Uggla: His first two years we got the appropriate value out of him based on his salary.

I'll give you credit for being consistent, but I think you understand my arguments too. I don't think we're enough like Tampa Bay, who IMO does it best. I feel like the philosophical way to build a team and construct your minor league system the way Dayton and JS thought of was dying and that Wren and Demacio were fresh minds at the right time to step in.

I think about how many pitchers developed under JS and Dayton's regime the last few years he was there. Davies failed, Ramirez failed, Moss failed, Lerew, etc.

Wren's team has really done well in picking bullpen candidates AND starting guys.
