Rome RHP Caleb Beech has been on a roll. 4 solid starts in a row, but his last two have bordered on the spectacular. He was a 2014 draftee out of Shelton State (AL) JC and his age is a little advanced for some reason. Curious if anyone knows the story. I think I read somewhere that he wasa very good high school QB and I wonder if he gave college football a shot before going back to baseball.

Good to see Martin getting stretched out. We could need another option for the rotation before the season is done.

Mallex Smith got on base multiple times again tonight, 1-3 with a BB and his 15th stolen base too. He went a long stretch without attempting stolen bases, while also sitting out of a number of games, after the foot injury. But lately and in a short time he's stolen 6-7 including third base a number of times to boost his stolen base numbers from 8 to 15. So I think it's safe to say his foot is better now.

Smith making a strong case for a mid-season promotion.

What's more impressive to me is that he didn't slump badly all the games he played not 100% with the foot issue. He was clearly limping while still beating out bunt hits for a week or so after the injury. It is good to see him back to stealing bases a lot again.

Smith just gets more and more interesting. He is walking at a higher rate the last few weeks which is a great sign.

I hope Dustin Peterson makes it back soon for Carolina and is able to quickly get back to where he left off. Carolina has lost 9 straight without him and without pretty much their whole rotation counting Janas who's still on the DL too. I still haven't found out what happened to Janas so if anyone knows please share that information.

Does anyone have any sort of clue when those guys will be back?

IIRC, Rico reported that a number of them are due back soon and Jacob Schrader did recently come back. The only thing I heard about Janas is that he was also hurt in the crash but he was already on the DL.

Smith making a strong case for a mid-season promotion.

Yep. He's hitting .348 and has an OBP of .395. He has nothing more to prove or learn at that level. Time to move him to Gwinnett.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I'm OK leaving Smith in AA for more time. He has only played 36 games above A, and they've all come in Mississippi this season. What's the rush?

If he keeps it up I could see a mid-season promotion, but to do so they'll have to make room by either promoting or demoting someone from Gwinnett as they're loaded with outfielders as it is. Plus Joey T hasn't even came off the DL yet. Personally, I'd drop or trade Joe Benson at some point and also promote Eury Perez to the Majors at some point. We'll need to at least drop EY Jr. from our Major league roster before promoting Perez.

Still SSS with Smith. AA has the more of the elite arms anyway. Keep him in AA. Promote him up with roster expansion.

No need to rush. See if Maybin has figured it out and/or is a trade chip. See if Cunnigham has any value. Same thing with Peraza. Don't rush.

We lack impact bats in the system. For the handful of guys with the possibility of being above avg offensive players, let's put them in the best chance to succeed.

Edgerton is the other position player I'd like to see given a mid-season promotion.

The chance to see how he and Peraza look together at the top of the order in Gwinnett?
