I think I'd like to see Cunningham hitting ninth, however, to turn over that lineup.

Not a huge gap between AJ and Beth these days so I am ready to see Beth catch 4 out of 5, but it's hard to argue for breaking up the Shelby/AJ battery.

I'd agree if this were July, but I think—given his hot start—the team still needs to see if Ne Plus Ultra can rebound a bit and build back some value as a potential trade-chip. I'm still hoping he can string together another couple hot, bleary-eyed weeks and fashion himself into someone a team with real desperation at the backstop—say, the White Sox—feel it's worth chancing.

What impresses me most about Miller is that he's had all this success with AJ catching him every game. Though he had some success initially with AJ in St. Louis I thought AJ hurt him some other losses late last year that he caught. But that isn't the case so far this year as Miller has been that good. Can you imagine how good he could do with a Lucroy catching him?

CJ had a -13 DRS last year at third while Uribe had a 17 DRS, so Uribe was 30 DRS better than Chris Johnson last year alone. That is how bad Chris Johnson is and how much better Uribe is than him.

Yea but the Padres didn't think he was for real when they made the trade. I mean they saw him as 4th outfielder material. I wonder if his success so far in AA is making them re-think that. If not then I just simply disagree with them.

USMA76
05-28-2015, 10:04 PM
A great defender at first or third can make an infield defense nearly airtight. I think of how "bulletproof" the infield defenses were for the Mets when they had Keith Hernandez or John Olerud at first. I don't think Uribe's in that class but combine his added range to what we already have with Simba, Peterson, and Freeman and our infield defense could be pretty salty. Chip and Joe keep commenting that Uribe should leave those balls alone for Simmons. However, it's always been a baseball maxim that a third baseman should cut off any ball that he can (regardless how good the SS is) because he's got a better angle and a shorter throw to first base than does the shortstop.

Disagree. To me, the major difference is Smith has shown much better on-base skills than Peraza. If Peraza doesn't hit for average, he'll be a liability at 2B—at least the very least, as long as Simmons doesn't improve substantially with the bat (and/or as long as the Braves have a no-homer hitter in RF).

I really hope we can trade Markakis at some point because I want to keep Peraza, Smith and Peterson but it will be harder to do with a no power corner outfielder starter in Markakis. I mean that is a lot of players with not much power, though Jace could end up a platoon player at third and back-up that plays all over either way.

Personally, I would be more interested in keeping Maybin and moving him to RF if we didn't have Markakis in the mix.

While this is true, we can't forget that Mallex Smith is 22 and Peraza is already a level ahead of him at 21. Peraza showed fine on-base skills at Rome and is doing it again at Gwinnett.

Peraza's bat is supposed to be better than Smith's. We'll see if that holds true, but where Smith will probably have to get some walks to be effective since he'll probably hit .270 or below, Peraza has a legitimate chance to be a .300 major league hitter.

I love both guys and hope they both turn into studs. I'm just not sure why Braves fans are suddenly souring some on Peraza. The guy is a legit prospect. There's no one right now who is wondering if he can be a good major-league regular in the future.

I mean, good grief, we're calling a kid who is hitting well at AAA as a 21-year-old, who is a top 50 prospect, a potential liability at 2B? That's insane.

I don't know that "Braves fans" are—I've just personally always been a bit skeptical of Peraza as a prospect, at least as far as offense is concerned. Empty averages scare me, especially from up-and-comers. So, yea, there is at least one person (me) "wondering if he can be a good major-league regular in the future", because a .296/.335/.384 (for instance) is a difficult line to carry at 2B if your team is offensively deficient at SS, C, and 3B as well (not to mention carrying a power-sapped RF).

Well, if you're right it's good to know we have Peterson for second base just in case. :)

It's definitely one of the many reasons why I think they shouldn't rush Peraza to Atlanta.

Which is not to say I don't think Peraza is a good prospect: I just have a few concerns that prevent me from thinking he's the slam-dunk a lot of posters view him as.

But the issue then is the other positions. That line would be fantastic, especially when combined with good defense and great speed, at 2B. You don't toss aside a good 2B because you don't have power elsewhere. You find power at those spots, where it's much easier to do.

We wouldn't get rid of Simmons because our C and 3B can't hit. Because Simmons is a great SS. If Peraza is a good 2B, that's all that matters from his standpoint.

Coffee is for closers only.

It would be nice to have a good lead for once though.

So, what we've learned tonight:

Shelby Miller is a boss.

Mukaki is slow.

Uribe is fat.

Not many people on this board watch Charleton Heston movies.

No one gets Julio's literary references.

Julio's wife may or may not read his posts.

Joe Simpson eats babies and is a teen pop savant.

Our Cunny is out there for the world to see.

Chip is still tweaking.

Did I miss anything?

If we learned that much, the Mukaki rebuild is ahead of schedule.

I'm pretty sure I was chastised just yesterday for saying we have over performed and will most likely not continue
