One rehab stint ends, another one begins.

Taking BJ Upton's place atop the Gwinnett lineup Saturday was a very frustrated and eager Jordan Schafer, who was playing the best baseball of his brief major league career when he fracrured his foot while fouling off a pitch. It took way too many days to get it properly diagnosed.

Schafer seemed close to being ready after just one night as the Gwinnett DH in Durham: 1-4 with a double and RBI and no strikeouts.

Upton's rehab lasted only three games because a roster spot became available when Laird when on the DL with kidney stones. Stands to reason that Cunningham goes back whenever Schafer is allowed to return.

LaStella is just killing it right now. Maybe it wasn't crazy to think he could get a callup in September.

Need to find a way to get LaStella in the big league lineup next year.

Hopefully Uggla can get hot in the next couple months and deal him even eating some of the contract.

One major development I'm seeing is that, throughout the system, they're turning the rabbits loose. They added Carroll, who once stole 68 bases in a season, to the Wren/Pedroza track meet in Rome and they are running teams ragged. Even the largely fogotten Myke Jones is running more, with success.

Can't see Fredi adopting this anytime soon. Too many CS, but I think Simmons and Heyward could really tear it up given the chance. Yes, I think Simmons is faster than most do.

Rico - who is Phillips? Are you talking about Daniel Carroll? Thanks!

My concern with Simmons and stolen bases has less to do with speed and more to do with Technique. For example. I don't think that there were many people faster than Jose Reyes in the last decade. But there were many guys who could steal better than him. It's the same with catchers and throwing to second. While having a cannon helps, the mechanics are most important. Bryce Harper has a way stronger arm than McCann, McCann is way better at catching than Harper is because he gets the ball out of his hand faster.

I think Bourn is greatly missed because I think he helped Jason get better jumps. We need to get a baserunning coach for real. Pendleton is a good guy I'm sure but we need someone who can teach our guys to be better runners. I remember watching Davey Lopes in Philly and he would actively discuss things with his baserunners including timing and things of that nature and the Phillies under him were one of the beset SB teams in baseball. Of course having Rollins and Victorino didn't hurt in the slightest but with Jason, Justin, Bossman, and Simmons we should have 4 guys with 15 plus stolen bases. To date Justin is the only person on this team with more than a run created in the bases. We only have 6 players above 1 and only 2 of them are starters (Bossman and Justin) 3 are bench (Schafer, Pastor and Constanza) and one is Hudson. Last year we had 10 players over 1, 6 were starters(counting Simmons and Pastor as starters), 2 were bench players (constanza and overbay) and 2 were pitchers. The massive falloffs of Simmons, Heyward, and Uggla have to be explained. They went from big positives to big negatives. All of them posting (though to be Simmons is in his second season) well below their worst season in the bases.

The disturbing thing is Heyward was showing an upward trend from his rookie season til last year, now he's below average. Someone has to be held accountable for this team's pathetic baserunning. Sadly the super fast kids we have coming up will have their talent wasted on this team it seems like.

Between the appendectomy and hamstring injury, I think we have the reasons Jason isn't running as much. I think he's going to be conservative the rest of the year. Next year I would look to him to go back to stealing bases.

Braves scouting and development is just remarkable. Even if he is nothing more than a #5 starter its a big win.

Great game by Johan Flande

8 3 1 1 0 8

He's probably better off being in another team's system, with less pitching talent on their upper minors teams.

Is he related to Yohan?

Even better than it seems at a glance. Details in new minors thread.
