They say you only get one chance to make a good first impression. Mike Soroka seized his chance on Saturday. The Braves' second first-round pick tossed four hitless innings in his Appalachian League debut as Rookie-level Danville cruised to an 11-4 victory over Bristol at Boyce Cox Field. Soroka struck out six and walked two. He retired the final eight battershe faced and left after reaching his 55-pitch limit.

"My fastball was there. It's usually the pitch I can count on," he said. "Changeup and slider were there for strikes and balls on finishing pitches. Started to get into a rhythm in the third or fourth. It would have been fun to keep going.

"Fastball command wasn't as good in the first two innings. I'm not sure if it was jitters or what. That's when my pitches started to open up."

The Braves' first-round pick in this year's Draft made the jump to the Appy League after four appearances in the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League, where he allowed two runs on five hits over 10 innings.

"It went really well. I couldn't have asked for much better," the 17-year-old right-hander said. "It's nice to get out of the GCL. It's a lot more fun."

Despite the success, Saturday's outing proved to be a learning experience for the Calgary native.

"I learned to adapt to the way some things are," Soroka said. "Our starter last night, Patrick Weigel, told me that the mound was flat and that I needed to work down. I made the adjustment between the second and third inning; I was missing up quite a bit in the first few innings."

Eighth-round pick Ryan Lawlor (1-0) earned the win, despite giving up four runs -- two earned -- on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts over 3 1/3 innings. Luis Gamez allowed a hit and a walk while recording the final five outs, two on strikeouts.

Carlos Castro had four hits, including a double, and scored twice, while Austin Riley doubled twice and drove in two runs for Danville.

If Soroka keeps pitching like this, he's going to end up in our top 10 by the end of the year, which would probably put him in the top 200 in all of baseball.

That's pretty incredible for a guy drafted where he was who wasn't really too high up on the radar at the time of the draft.

That article has a mistake. Soroka was out second pick but was a first rounder.

There is a good blog post about Christian Bethancourt at the GBraves blog. The article is an interview with the Braves minor league catching coordinator Joe Breeden.

http://gwinnettbravesblog.mlblogs.com/2015/07/31/atlanta-braves-minor-league-catching-coordinator-discusses-bethancourt-catching-philosophies/

It's good to read that Christian is doing a lot more film study with the pitching coach and is now leading the pitching meetings prior to each series. It's also good that since he has been sent down, he only has 1 error and 1 passed ball. He has also thrown out 47.5% of runners trying to steal since going down.

This guy has all the tools to be a top catcher. If he starts putting things together mentally, then I think a lot of fans will realize they have given up on him too soon. The Benito Santiago comparison has been around Christian for quite some time.

He missed more time due to the bus wreck than anyone else.

I think he is another one of those less heralded prospects that the scouts really liked and thought could be a sleeper. Similar to Gant/Whalen/Bird.

I.E. the guys we traded for recently...could have easily listed Parsons, Sobotka or Povse

I like having so many arms like that. The chances of a couple becoming major league options are pretty good, and suddenly they carry a lot more value in a trade.
