Lucas Sims, Mississippi (ATL)
(2-0, 0.79 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 11 1/3 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 HR, 1 HBP, 6 BB, 15 K)
Sims has had his problems in 2015, most notably in the control department, but in his last four starts, he's been close to stellar. Following last week's starts, the Braves' No. 7 prospect is 3-0 with a 1.99 ERA, 29 strikeouts and 13 walks in 22 2/3 innings over his last four Southern League outings. Armed with an impressive fastball and curveball, Sims has improved to 3-2 with a 4.19 ERA and 44 strikeouts while holding Double-A hitters to a .179 average in 34 1/3 innings with Mississippi. The effects of his late-season turnaround haven't been lost on the right-hander. "The final month especially, that's your most recent memories going into the offseason," Sims told MiLB.com on Sunday. "You always want to finish strong and head into the offseason on a positive note and take that and hopefully roll with it into the next year."

Randy Ventura is probably our best prospect in the DSL. 70+ Runner.

Ahhhhh... didn't realize he was THAT Ventura... at least it sounds minor for him. Severino broke his leg... hopefully he can come back from that.

Hope he can finish strong. Was having a great season until the bus crash. He's been hitting better for the last couple of weeks.

Following the same kind of layoff, Yoan Moncada struggled for weeks in A- before finally getting it going. I really wouldn't expect too much too soon from Olivera.

Yeah, I'm not freaking out. I would like to see him turn it up a notch soon though

He could be a valuable contributor to our drive to catch the Phillies. Not saying I lack confidence in the guys currently with the major league team.

Well, it's very clear that some who did not like the trade are going to pounce on Olivera when he struggles the way all hitters go through slumps. He's just posting an .852 OPS in 44 AAA plate appearances this year.

I'm more worried that he has that few ab's than whether he'll hit. I think he'll be fine offensively. Can he play 3b and stay healthy? That's what I'm worried about

Would be some kind of awesome to see Sims, Mallex, Ruiz, Peterson, Riley, Briceno, Morales, and Acuna finish with a bit of a mini-tear going - sure would make the offseason system rankings pretty interesting with 2015 promotions taken into account.

Ruiz has a .295/.356/.462/816 line for August. I still like him a lot

Difference there is Moancada is like 22

Not syaing Olivera isn't allowed to struggle. But as someone who hated the trade, he hasn't given much reason for hope so far, either offensively or defensively

Moncada was 19. But Olivera had a similar layoff and was coming from the same level of competition. Whatever advantage Olivera has in maturity and experience may be somewhat mitigated by the fact that he is facing pitching that is 3 rungs up the ladder.

I'm not particularly bullish on Olivera, I am merely advising that it will likely take some time before he is on the beam and we can really see what he's capable of. That kind of layoff is no joke, combined as it is with a significantly higher level of competition.

The point is, if he stinks right now it shouldn't come as a surprise, and it's not necessarily predictive of what his future is going to be. If he still stinks after a reasonable trial...

He's not striking out much. Only reason to really get nervous is if he was just looking like an idiot down there. Could just be pure bad luck. His peripherals pretty much lineup up where I think they should based off of what kind of hitter he is expected to be.
