How close is Jenkins to getting an opportunity in Atlanta?

How close is Jenkins to getting an opportunity in Atlanta?

If he does well tonight, I'd put him as the odds on favorite to start for the Braves on Saturday.

Anyone care to chime in on Jenkins... I asked this question in another milb GDT, but how does he get it done? Pitch to weak contact? He doesn't K a ton of guys, and keeps the walks down I suppose. Always seems the ER are down below where they ought to be judging by the peripherals right?

I wouldn't even say that, at 3.83 BB/9, he keeps his walks down. that's pretty bad for a guy who doesn't K anyone. yet, his FIP this year is 3.83 with his ERA at 3.02. so he must be doing something right.

but i don't know what it is, so I can't answer your question. it's a wonder to me his K rate is so low.

His FIP is being kept down by a very low home run rate. 0.4 per nine innings. Over the course of his minor league career he has shown an ability to avoid giving up the long ball. But the 0.4 is very low even by his standards. The big question is how this skill translates to the major league level, where the hitters have a lot more power.

Jenkins is supposed to have pretty good stuff so his inability to miss bats is kind of puzzling.

That was my impression as well. Exactly the reason I asked... anyone seen him in person of late?

Jenkins won't survive the Majors with a Whip of 1.4.

A few observations from tonight's game in Mobile:

Levi Hyams: Three run homer in the sixth to break a scoreless tie. Deep shot to RF.

Michael O'Neal: Didn't have a name on his jersey tonight. A bit of a shaky start in the first, gave up a leadoff double (batter was thrown out trying to extend it to a triple). Was solid in his last three innings. Did have a couple hard hit balls that were hit right at the defense.

Dansby Swanson: Waited until his final at bat in the ninth inning to extend his hitting streak. As much as we talk about his offense, his defense is real good. He probably needs to stay at SS.

The Braves were a very opportunistic team tonight. All four runs were unearned thanks to two errors by the Mobile shortstop. In fact, Hyams' home run immediately followed the first error in the sixth inning.
