The Curious Trade for Mel Rojas Jr. -- and why it's cool

(This part of the story courtesy of John Dreker for piratesprospects.com on May 9)

Mel Rojas Jr. Traded to Atlanta Braves

The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded Mel Rojas Jr., who last played on May 4, to the Atlanta Braves for cash. Rojas was recently dropped from the Indianapolis roster and wasn't seeing much playing time early in the season. In 12 games, he hit .154 with a .484 OPS. Rojas, who turned 26 on Thursday, was drafted in the third round in 2010 and called a raw player with five-tool potential. He never quite put everything together, always seeming to be more potential over production. He would have become a minor league free agent after this season and with the amount of time he was playing, he wasn't going to stick around after the season. The Pirates essentially sent him to the team that has a spot for him in a deal that likely was just a trade made to help the player.
(OK, this is me)
He looks like a prospect: 6-2, 225, switch-hitter. Assigned down a level to Mississippi, he seemed at first to be a player who was one foot out the door and the other on a banana peel -- he began as a Brave going 0-for-9 and just 2-for-24. But then something clicked.
Since May 20, he has gone, at this writing 9-for-24 since with a pair of doubles, a homer and some world class defense for which he was best appreciated. He recently began batting leadoff for the M-Braves. On May 28, he was 2-2 with a double and sacrifice fly and began Sunday's game with a hit. A five-tool faded prospect off the scrap heap -- not the worst move I've ever heard.
FYI: He is indeed son of the former MLB pitcher and a nephew of Felipe, Matty, Jesus, etc., which would I guess make him a cousin to Moises. Once upon a time, as a college freshman, he stole 60 bases in 62 tries.
