View Full Version : 6/14 Tuesday Minor League Thread ... Braves HAVE developed a hitter!

He nowhere near the hot list of Braves prospect, but it undeniable that 24-year-old first baseman Joey Meneses is having a year that will put him on the prospect map. After going 1-for-2 in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader, he is hitting .342. In the Advanced Class A Carolina League, he began today with an 18-point lead in the league batting race. He also has the most hits in the league.

This week, named Carolina League POW, Meneses has had back-to-back 4-hit games, including a walk-off RBI single.

After having a 15-game hitting streak in May, he has hit in 8 of his last nine games, with six of them multi-hit games. Monday, he had a career-high five RBIs after previous posting four RBIs on Saturday. He has shown some power; his 17 doubles are fourth in the league, and he has a team-leading five homers.

Meneses, a Mexico native, broke in with the Braves in the 2011 DSL season at age 18. He came back to the DSL a year later and raised his average 100 points, to .303. He has had to move up the chain slowly, needing two years at each level. At Rome, he hit .257 in 2013, .283 in '14.

His 2014 season was plagued by two stints on the disabled list, a wrist injury causing problems much of the year.

Hit .239 at Carolina last year, but is on a rampage this year.

I'm bloody excited to see us develop a bat, period, but particularly one with some pop. Joey's track record is spotty but this year he really seems to be going with the flow.

I'm going to go ahead and assume you are joking about Meneses. A 24 year old first baseman in High A ball with 18 HRs over 1500+ PAs is not, and never will be, considered a MLB prospect.

Jesus, guys, I'm just trying to write about something different. The bleak negativity of the season has pervaded this space so completely, some of you can't even enjoy a little optimism.

All I did in that piece was give you the facts about his season and his career. Just because I'm doing a series on the 10 bleakest days in Braves history, doesn't mean that's all I care about. I want to believe things will get better.

I enjoyed it. To be honest, everyone already knows all that there is to know about the prospects that matter. I enjoy these nice little anecdotes on the more obscure guys. Keep em coming

Contrary to popular opinion, there are prospects who are late developers and put things together at a little older age. Meneses signed as a 19 year old out of Mexico, and he has dealt with a litany of injuries in his career at this point. At his age, he needs to be tested at Mississippi to see what we may have, but to completely write him off is foolish.

The same goes for Joseph Odom, who the Braves think enough about to send him to the Arizona Fall League.

Trying to fight that negativity. Those that question and disagree with anyone who tries to see the bright side of any situation are going to disagree with you regardless of whether you have a good point.

Thank you for the write up rico. I am not quite sure why anyone would be so critical. This is a message board and we aren't all going to agree. To go to the extreme of saying why write it is kind of rude imo. If you aren't interested in rico's report then don't read it!

It doesn't upset me in the least. I literally thought it was a satirical story. I suppose some want to look at that guy as a top prospect. Fine, but they are wrong.

If you write something and then have it criticized, it's OK. No need to get super defensive because someone disagrees with something you write. You'll be fine in life no matter what I think about your points, so try not to get so foaming at the mouth any time I post a critical comment.

Hopefully Albies and Swanson are turning it around. Everyone was waiting for them to scuffle a bit so we could see how they respond. Looks like we may be getting those long awaited responses.

Bad season. Disappointing draft. The saviors, Albies and Swanson, are struggling. None of the "elite" pitching prospects are performing at an elite level with any consistency. There are very few options on the upcoming FA market to dream about helping in 2017. All the trade talk recently is about trading away Julio, 1 of the only 2 above average MLB players on the roster.

It's a very rough time for all Braves fans.

Most of the experts said we had one of the best drafts. I think we knocked it out of the park. Plenty of international hitting this year with more bats coming in next years draft. Not to mention we have a ton of pitching to package with other players to get big time hitters now.
