Why would they promote Ellis just before he was to be the all star starter? This sounds like a horrendous decision based on knowing nothing.

I think Ellis would perfer to be one step closer to mlb than some double A all star game. It is a honor to get the nod. But I bet he is happier

Happens all the time, every year, all over the minors. He still gets the ring and the designation without having to pitch in Pearl, Mississippi, on the second day of summer. Win-win.

well that's just stupid. getting these kids to learn to be great and in big settings is part of the process. a meaningless inning or not, that would have been something he could have taken with him, add to his confidence and his resume. these guys should be learning how to do everything, not getting promoted a day early only to get creamed.

all you did by promoting him is take away one more very positive experience the kid could have had on his way up. these guys in these front offices should hire a department specifically in charge of not ****ing up the emotional development of their farm. there's no way the front office is going to be able to keep up with all of what's going on with the individual aside from the numbers he puts up. i have no doubt it would be beneficial if they started taking these things more into account.

1) I did not promote Ellis

2) Midseason promotions are simplay a practical consideration. It's a three-day break, and players who are deserving of a promotion can sometime take their time and move their families. That did not apply to Ellis, but there was need at Gwinnett for a starter right then and there.

3) Players often have a choice to stay and play in a game or not. It's no automatic that one wants to stay or leave.

4) Minor league all-star games are not that big a deal. Crowds seldom top 3-4,000 and it's still a minor league stadium. Only upside of a free extra day or two in Pearl is a chance to play the tables and I don't think that's what the Southern League has in mind.

5) Very few players have bonus clauses in their minor league contracts, unlike guys who get a small fortune if they make the all-star team.

FYI, 40 percent chance of thundershowers tonight in Mississippi.

locally they are saying 70% on the coast and expanding northward (per the Shuckers weather update)
