Read something over on reddit about Danville's Jacob Webb. He has 27 k's in 10 inning. Basically 27 of 30 outs have come via k. That is pretty amazing. He was a late round 2014 draft pick that missed last year so he is old for rookie league. But you still have to give a shout out to someone who accomplishes what he has in rookie ball.

Taken note that seven of our July 2 international signees have already made their debuts. The DSL season is in its final week, but here are the number so far from this year's class:

Jeffrey Ramos, of, Dominican Republic R/R 6-1, 185
The first up, already in 26 games, 101 ABs: (1-10-.228, 1 SB).

Franger Carrillo, of, Venezuela R/R 6-1, 185
Only in 4 games, 0-f-12 so far, but only 2 Ks

Braulio Vasquez, inf, Dominican Republic S/R 6-0, 170
Shortstop hit the ground running! 20 games, 68 AB (.353-9-5, 7 SBs). Hitting .410 in his last 10 games, six of them multi-hit games. Doesn't turn 18 until next April

Andres Adrianza, c, Venezuela R/R 6-0, 190
Has gotten plentyof work since joining DSL Braves: 22 games (15 at 1B, 5 at C), 75 ABs (.173-0-3); 1-4 on CS

Victor de Hoyos, c, Colombia R/R 5-9, 170
Later arrival, 8 games, 26 ABs (.154-0-2) caught 5 games, had six assists but 0-8 CS

Lisandro Santos, lhp, Dominican Republic L/L 6-1, 170
Made two appearances so far: 4.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 K, 0.00. Turned 18 July 24

Guillermo Zuniga, rh, Colombia, 6-3, 195 (still only 17)
Made two appearances: 1-0, 4.1 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 1 BB, 5 K

I'm confused... I thought the international class signed this year could not play until next year...?

Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's because these players are 17, not 16.

Did you see harrel was DL today. Amazing that everyone we traded recently has fallen apart.

Yea, he pulled his groin in the second inning last night. I knew he had to be hurt even before they took him out as his fastball was the speed of a change-up. I guess good news for Texas is that it was only his groin and not his arm as I had wondered based on the velo dropping so much that his fastballs registered as change-ups. Tough break for Harrell.

Newcomb with 7 k's and only one walk today was pretty good, though he gave up some hits

One is 18, the rest have turned 17. But it was pointed out to me that Maitan and some of the others signed contracts for 2017. I don't know if that is to keep the books balanced or what, but none of the guys who are playing got million-dollar deals.

Likely to do with delaying the time before they have to go on the 40 man roster. I believe as 16 year old international signings they get 5 years before needing to be on the 40 man roster. So that would put them at 21 by the time they need to be added.

Newcomb turning a corner?

I like this stat line much more than 5 innings with 4 walks. Pcola is a good team and sometimes hitters get hits.

Newcomb's only walk last night came against the first batter of the game. In his last four starts, he's at 32 K/7 BB.

Newcomb is definitely pitching well. I don't care that much about the walks, honestly. I think he can slowly bring them down enough. I just want to see him become more efficient and go deeper in games.

I think if he can start to get to 6 IP on the low end with consistency, he's just about good enough to be pitching in the majors.

It also tells me he was in the zone a lot more. When you're pounding the zone you're going to give up hits. Think of Greg Maddux, he gave up 8.5 hits per 9 in his career and never threw a no hitter. The reason was he lived in the zone.

Newcomb has good enough stuff to be able to throw over the plate. He doesn't need to nibble or try to get hitters to chase balls off the plate. He can challenge guys.

I'm digging Newcomb. I think the kid has a lot of upside and he has a lot fewer innings on his arm due to playing in the Northeast and be a mutli-sport start in high school.

Yeah, it's great to see Newcomb showing some sustained command. Knowing what we know about him, I could care less about him giving up six hits.
