Because Gattis sucks right now and Terdo is still a rook and Elliot is playing with the hot hand. This should explain it all.

Hot hand??? He's 5 for 20 since joining the Braves, he's not exactly tearing it up. Way more upside with Terdo or Gattis.

We're talking about Elliot Johnson, a bench player who was dropped from a playoff contender and had a .458 OPS for the year over in KC!!! Since coming over to Atlanta, he's got a sparkling .600 OPS. We're talking Janish bad here. Any option is better.

Yeah, that's gotta be it. Probably going to play small ball with Schafer and Elliot. Nobody's mentioned defense and I didn't think Elliot was and OF, period. But he's fast so maybe he's better defensively than I realize.

A better question is why would you want Gattis starting?

He's been awful, worse than BJ since June but we should start him?

Not like it matters, not like we will do much vs Fernandez anyway.

Would of preferred Terdo but not a huge deal.

I think all of you guys are nuts. I think we will get to Fernandez.

He's given up 2 runs or less in 8 straight starts.

Barring a rain shortened start, I doubt we get to him.

Maybe get 1-2 runs, doubtful we get much more, he's the real deal.

Yeah, because saying a guy with a 2.30 ERA and has been one of the top pitchers in baseball is really going out on a limb, can't give credit to other players?

I think those numbers would be about par for Schafer with a little bit higher OBP like .330. Unfortunately that is better than the guy who is robbing the Braves. I wouldn't dislike BJ so much if it didn't seem like he just doesn't care what happens. There's no hustle from this guy and I just don't see any fire in this guy what so ever. Seems to me that he's happy to have ripped of the Braves and doesn't care what happens. Look at how he fielded the ball just a minute ago on that pop up. Very Carl Crawford like if you ask me and that doesn't fly in Atlanta. I want guys with heart who love to play the game and not guys who get paid and quit trying because they got paid.

I mean it's kind of a fine line with a young pitcher who hasn't came close to pitching 200 innings. I just am curious as to what we do with him come the play-offs? Seems like the magic number for these guys is a 170 IP with the idea of letting Julio go 200 next year. That's only true with an injury. If everyone position playerwho's on the 25 man now is healthy, he cannot make it.

That's how I interpret it as well, but here's David O'Brien's take: "Gattis’ eligibility for the postseason roster will not be affected. Any player who is a part of an organization as of Aug. 31 is eligible to play with that team in the postseason."

And here are the official eligibility rules:

Post-Season Roster Eligibility

1. All players on a club's MLB Active List (25-man roster) as of midnight (Eastern) on August 31st are eligible to be included on the club's post-season (LDS, LCS, or World Series) 25-man roster. Players who are on an MLB club's Disabled List, Bereavement List, Paternity List, Military List, Suspended List, or Restricted List (Prohibited Substance Suspension or extended Bereavement Leave only) as of midnight (Eastern) on August 31st are also eligible to be included on the club's post-season 25-man roster, but only after spending the minimum number of days required to be served by a player on that list. Players on the Disqualified List, Ineligible List, or Restricted List (for reasons other than extended Bereavement Leave or a Prohibited Substance Suspension) as of midnight August 31st are not eligible. Thus, as long as more than 25 players are eligible, the club's MLB Active List (25-man roster) can be "tweaked" prior to the start of each post-season series.

2. Generally, a post-season eligible player who is on an MLB Disabled List (7-day, 15-day, or 60-day) at the conclusion of the MLB regular season can be replaced on his club's LDS, LCS, or World Series Active List (25-man roster) by any player (regardless of position) who was in the club's organization as of midnight (Eastern) on August 31st, including players acquired from another organization prior to midnight on August 31st and minor leaguers who were not on the club's MLB 40-man roster at that time. Any player who is placed directly onto an MLB 60-day Disabled List after August 1st is NOT eligible to be replaced on a post-season roster (and is not eligible to be reinstated from the 60-day DL and placed onto the club's MLB Active List until 60 days have passed), but a player who is transferred from the 15-day DL to the 60-day DL after August 1st is eligible to be replaced. Players on the Disqualified List, Ineligible List, or Restricted List (for reasons other than extended Bereavement Leave or a Prohibited Substance Suspension) as of midnight (Eastern) on August 31st are not eligible to be a "replacement player." A player who is on a Disabled List or who is serving a Prohibited Substance Suspension cannot be a post-season "replacement player" until the player has served the required minimum number of days (if on a DL) or games (if suspended). If the "replacement player" is on a minor league reserve list, the player must be added to his club's MLB Reserve List (40-man roster) before he can be made eligible for the post-season.

3. A post-season eligible player who is injured prior to the start of a post-season series can (with approval of the MLB Commissioner) be replaced on his club's MLB Active List (25-man roster) for that series by another player (regardless of position) who was in the club's organization as of midnight August 31st, including players acquired from another organizaiton prior to midnight August 31st and minor league players who were not on the club's MLB 40-man roster at that time. Players on the Disqualified List, Ineligible List, or Restricted List (for reasons other than extended Bereavement Leave or a Prohibnited Substance Suspension) as of midnight August 31st are not eligible to be a "replacement player." A player who is on a Disabled List or who is serving a Prohibited Substance Suspension cannot be a post-season "replacement player" until the player has served the required minimum number of days (if on a DL) or games (if suspended). If a replacement player is on a minor league reserve list, the player mustr be added to his club's 40-man roster before he can be made eligible for the post-season.

4. A post-season eligible player who is injured during a post-season series can (with approval of the MLB Commissiner) be replaced on his club's MLB Active List (25-man roster) prior to the conclusion of that series by another player (albeit in this case a pitcher must replace a pitcher and a position player must replace a position player) who was in the club's organization as of midnight August 31st, including players acquired from another organizaton prior to midnight August 31st and minor league players who were not on the club's MLB 40-man at that time.

5. If an injured pitcher or position player is replaced during a post-season series, the injured pitcher or position player is ineligible to be reinstated to his club's Active List (25-man roster) for the balance of that series and the next series (LCS or World Series).

Wow, not only does Gattis not start on his night (even with J. Upton out), he also gets demoted right after the game. That's cold, I agree that he needs AB's but I totally disagree with how Fredi has handled this situation (including going back to before his injury).

Technically only the players on the 25 man roster at the end of the last day of August are eligible for the playoff roster but if they put one of those 25 players on the DL then anyone who was not signed/traded for in September can replace them. Now there is a giant loophole there because you can DL a player for a headache or any reason and MLB doesnt really care. Unless it was hurt the Yankees, then they would probably go all out for an investigation.

I'm happy for Gattis. He should have been in AAA much sooner. Guy still has loads of potential. Just needs to fine tune his approach.

No according to DOB Gattis is eligible regardless. The rule is anyone in the organization by midnight August 31st is eligible. That is what DOB said in his article about Gattis. The Braves would not have made this move if would make him ineligible for the post-season.

Not disagreeing with you, but I think Dave is wrong here. The rules specifically state the player must be on the 25-man roster on the 31st. Unless I'm just reading them totally wrong.

I think they do have to be on the roster, but there are loopholes big enough to drive a truck through, so it is not a problem.

Yeah, you are right -- but I still disagree with the AJC's "Any player who is a part of an organization as of Aug. 31 is eligible to play with that team in the postseason" statement. FWIW, it was written by Carroll Rogers, not DOB.

I haven't read the article, but I would guess they mean as long as the player is in the organization by 8/31 the are ways to get them on the roster. Anyone traded for or picked up after that are ineligible for post season play even in the event of DLing someone.

Seriously do you really think the Braves would have made this move if it was going to affect his playoff eligibility. It won't. I promise you is eligible for the post-season. No need to even worry about that. Bowman has also confirmed that.

Again, I'm not contesting the notion that Gattis will/won't be eligible for the postseason.

To say "any player in the organization is eligible" is an incorrect way of phrasing things.

A better way would be: "The Braves can (again) add him to their post season roster by replacing a disabled player (who is TBD.)"

Bossman will be DL'd and will have lasik like Uggla.

We are just arguing semantics. The loophole is so big and obvious that to state that anyone in the organization is eligible is not really an incorrect statement. I dont know who they are bringing up but I they will more than likely be DL'd with a headache the last day of the season so Gattis can get on the roster. I can almost guarantee you this is how they got the third catcher on the postseason roster every year since I doubt they were on the roster before roster expansion.

Guys.. we have a pretty good team this year.

Agreed. And with this waiver wire mess, I'm afraid every Brave playing in the post season is already on the roster. I highly doubt there will be a trade today for another bat or RP. Guess we'd better hope that Heyward can return and Uggla and BJ get it together these last few weeks!

The reason I seem to think there is going to be a trade is that the Braves are holding off on the roster move. With Gwinnett heading out on the road, you would have thought the move would have been announced last night. Just seems strange if they were going to call up a guy like Constanza, they would have already done it last night.

I think they are going to work on bringing an outfielder in but if that doesn't happen Conztanza will be the move.

Why would they be bringing in another OFer?? Reed Johnson can come off the DL anytime they wish. The magic number is getting smaller, and Heyward should be back in plenty of time. With Elliot Johnson I see no need for Constanza since speed is his only asset.

I think it is just what Fredi is saying, give him some at bats, when the post season is clinched, give him some starts.
