He's been in their rotation for months. And he'll stay there because their younger guys are hitting innings limits.

At this point, I think its obvious we aren't going to have Uggla and BJ Upton in our playoff starting lineup. Two of our highest paid players are two of our worst, yet, we are still one of the best teams in baseball...Amazing.

That's a good thing. There's an article from Mark Bowman on his blog addressing the Upton benching, basically saying he had his chance but there's too much of a need for Gattis and Shaefer

IDC what anybody says, I'd start Uggla over Elliot in the playoffs 7 days out of the week...

I think Fredi wants to try and clinch first, and clinch homefield, then the last week let Uggla and BJ get all the at-bats to try and prove something...

Gattis is going to hit it into the seats... where there's no fans to retrieve the ball. And I'm not even speaking about a homerun.

Fredi (like most managers and coaches in most sports) doesn't like to change his lineup after a win. Still, I'm surprised to see Uggla held out for the second consecutive game. With BJ we've already seen some of this with Schafer during some stretches splitting playing time with him in center. It will be interesting if Fredi does something similar with Uggla and Elliot Johnson.

You underrate Johnson's talismanic powers. He is a white talisman. Lemke was our last white talisman. They are very rare and very powerful. Sort of on the order of Mew.

Well at least six out of seven. I'm surprised Fredi's not playing his slumping overpaid duo tonight since it appears to be the best chance to get bad pitching. Especially Uggla.

Uggla from the first half was acceptable. Elliot Johnson is actually an improvement over the Uggla we've seen the last couple months.

Uggla OPS during the first half: .738
Uggla OPS so far in the second half: .533

Yes, I see. And I think that it's more likely that Uggla can put together six weeks that are more like 1st-half Uggla than that Elliot Johnson will impersonate a replacement-level MLB 2nd baseman for the same period of time. I respect your opinion. You could be right. I'm just not rushing to hang my hat on the "anyone-but-Uggla" peg.

I think Fredi just has to keep an open mind. Play EJ two or three games a week. Just see who is playing better down the stretch.

Honestly what in the world did Wren and the Braves scouts see in BJ to offer him such a huge contract? IMO he is currently 5th on the OF depth chart with Heyward out. Not even sure if he warrants a playoff roster spot. I know Wren and Fredi will have him on the roster, but he truly does not deserve one.

I'm guessing they saw a guy with a good career. But I think 5th on the depth chart is too harsh. He's better than Schafer, with a healthy Jason I'd have him on the bench in the playoffs if he doesn't start hitting.

I'm looking at the numbers, BJ with a career 103 wRC+ Schafer has a career 75

Schafer being hot in April and May doesn't effect now, going into tonight, Schafer has a .476 OPS since coming back from the DL in that same basic time frame Bossman has a .609 OPS. Neither are good, but Bossman has been better.

You say that like he has been this bad before. What they saw was a plus defender at a premium position with 30-30 potential who is entering his prime years. I was an advocate for signing him too. No one expected this. He has always had bad slumps but he had months like Justin had in April and August to make up for it. He just hasnt had that hot streak to balance out his stat line this year. He had a decent June but crap beyond that. Hopefully he evens that out with a full season hot streak next year.

So? It's not like Jordan Schafer is Ichiro. He's struck out in his career 26.6% of the time, for Bossman's career he's struck out 25.9% of the time

Care to keep digging the hole?

This.

I missed much of the game tonight. But I saw in the boxscore Avilan's name without getting any outs. He wasn't hurt was he?

OK, I just read on twitter that Avilan was removed for Ayala after he hit a batter. I'd never bring in Ayala with the bases loaded in a 4-3 game, but I am glad it worked this time. I just hope it's not a playoff preview...

I've reviewed the Schafer vs BJ argument and decided the answer is "other".

Seriously, the "better" of the two has a .609 OPS? Good God y'all.

You're right BJ is probably the league's MVP this year:) I know Schafer's career numbers are not great, but for the 2013 season he has done a better job than BJ. I throw out BJ's career numbers as part of the question why did the Braves pay him such a huge contract. Honestly can anyone defend BJ's play this season? One of the worst seasons by any major leaguer this season if not the worst. He is in a hole not me.

No they just brought him in to pitch to the lefty and he hit him.

Not a fresh injury, but I definitely think he is hurt.

Bossman has sucked this year, no one is defending that. Schafer has sucked since the end of May. So because Schafer was hot 4 months ago eh should play over BJ? I don't think either should play come post season.

And I also prefer "other" on BJ-Schafer. Sorry, it's not going to happen for BJ. Time and time and time again, he's failed.

Gattis/Heyward/Justin is the way to go in October. Hopefully anyway.

This pretty much sums it up. The Heyward injury has given Fredi the chance to play both BJ and Schafer, and neither has shown anything. Gattis may have his flaws at the plate and is a butcher in LF, but at least he is dangerous at the plate.
