View Full Version : Hype Train Off Ramp

A few clarifying points about this thread:

First, apologies for mixing transportation metaphors. But I think everyone gets the point.

Second, I don't want to spoil anyone's fun when it comes to hyping prospects. I wouldn't want this to turn into a place to police people wanting to hype their favorite prospects. But it is intended to be a place where those of us who had a more realistic take on some of them can have a good-natured "I told you so." And if anyone is occasionally brave enough to come here for a helping of crow, good for them.

I will kick things off by planting my flag on two prospects that seem to be generating some excessive enthusiasm. I will note that I root for all prospects, including the ones I think are over-hyped. As a matter of fact, I'm happier for those guys who exceed expectations.

So my initial inductees into the Over-Hyped Train are...

drum rolls please....

Travis Demeritte

Alex Jackson

I want to be very clear that I don't hold anything against these two young men and will be rooting for them as much as anyone. But my inducting them here reflects a judgment that they will come up short of some of the expectations being expressed. I see them as most likely to be bench players at the major league level. Nothing wrong with that btw. There have been some very talented prospects who never even reached the majors.

And a retrospective induction of a player who everyone acknowledges is a very nice guy. But who generated what I thought was a fair amount of hyperbole (based in part of a short clip of his "devastating" curve).

The one and only....

Tyrell Jenkins

Man, I never loved Jenkins. When we acquired him he was 22 and hadn't played above A ball. Compare him to Sims, who hit AAA at 22. And Sims isn't a truly amazing prospect. A high school prospect who's 21 or 22 and not making the jump without a huge injury (I don't consider TOmmy John to be huge without complications during recovery) I know Jenkins's arm is the selling point, sometimes people don't have what it takes to put the ball in the zone effectively. In AA he walked 41 and only struck out 59 in 93 innings. Neither of those numbers are good. In AAA he's walked 81 and struck out 110 in 165 innings. Again neither of those numbers are good. HIs ERA was deflated by a really low HR/FB rate and a great BABIP. I'm not to say he can't be an acceptable pitcher, but for me I only saw his path to the majors as a reliever who threw max effort. Because if he's walking around 4 per 9 in AA and AAA that doesn't bode well for the bigs. And the kicker is unlike wild pitchers, he doesn't have a the strikeout rate. Walking 4 and striking out 6 in the minors is worse than what Chuck James did for the Braves in the majors.

Boy a few off-season blurbs about his defense in the afl for TD and then Jacksons hitting in 160 Abs and now they have "hype".

I guess I don't see it. Except from the the.

Oh and trains don't have off ramps. They aren't cars on the interstate.

it should have become clearer in the last couple hours why the picture had to be kept a bit blurry...it would not be appropriate to fully reveal the various shades of red that were evidenced upon the faces of the of the people in the picture
