I still really think it should be: Medlen – Teheran – Minor – (Wood).

Maybe they think that Wood just isn't ready to handle playoff pressure. Freddy has his share of issues, but at least they know he'll not be awed by the moment.

Garcia is going to be our fourth starter. Oh boy...

tululush
09-24-2013, 06:40 PM
Kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place. On the one hand you want him to not pitch as well so we can go with someone like Wood. However on the other hand if he doesn't do well we may not lock up hfa. Also, if Garcia fails we're probably looking at Maholm due to our pen needs and the 4th starter would pitch on the road, where Maholm has struggled this season. So, you almost have to root for Garcia by default.

Garcia is going to be our fourth starter. Oh boy...

stpeteirish

looks like we're helpless at the plate again tonight. If we can't hit the Brewers, how can you expect us to suddenly heat up in the playoff vs much better pitching.

Amazing that Bianchi got that ball out but Evan's hit the wall (I realize Bianchi's was pulled to the shorter side of the fence more towards the pole).

Garcia having another good game is most likely a terrible thing for the team. This is exactly why some of us were not at all happy when he got the starting nod. The guy had around a 5.50 ERA over the last 160 innings before joining the Braves. Can't believe he is going to get a playoff start.

Good win tonight, esp. since Cardinals beating Nats again. Gattis had a great game at plate, his best in a while. He should've had 3 hits at least but the official scorers in Atlanta gave him the Simmons treatment (anything close is an error). But regardless 4 solid AB's tonight. Simmons with a big hit to win it. But I don't like it that he's still not getting any rest.

According to MLB.com the official scorers corrected the call on the Gattis hit. It was changed to a hit rightly, but shouldn't have needed changing. It was fielded on the shortstop side of second and stayed down. That's a hit all the way. I hate the official scorers in Atlanta, they've stolen a lot of hits from Simmons but apparently Gattis won't get the Simmons treatment this time. Though he did on the initial ruling.

Yea well the Cards are still trying to wrap up the central. Nats have nothing left to play for, so they could just lay down to stick it to us.

Exactly and I'd expect nothing less. Philly did same against Cardinals the year the Cardinals caught us.

According to them there is no chance the Braves make it past NLDS so they just ignore us even though we made the playoffs. If we make the NLCS they will probably spend the whole series talking about how we lucked out and the other team we face is lucky we took out whoever we did so they dont have to face them.

Well, I guess they couldn't make up their mind. Now MLB.com has changed it back to an error taking away what should've been a third hit in the game for Gattis. Again, I hate the official scorers in Atlanta...

Play 162 games, then have your season decided by a one game playoff where anything can happen.

I don't see why any fans of the Braves could still support it after how it burned us last year. I hate it for the record, we were cheated and didn't deserve to have our solid season go down the drain like that.

It ruined the end of Chipper's final year too, IMO.

I wouldn't mind a 3 game series, as opposed to a 1 game play in.

However, while I'm extremely biased against the 1 game playoff, it really does make the importance of winning your division that much more meaningful. Yeah we had a bunch of wins on St. Louis last year, but if we had taken care of business against Washington, we would've had a series instead of a play-in.

We won 94 games last year, we would of had to win 99 games to win the division, know how hard that is?

There is no reason we should of played in that abortion of a playoff game.

I feel very, very bad for the two teams who lose in the play in game, I really do, especially if it's the Pirates.

MLB Network like most everyone else were almost crying about the Nats season all year. When we had that great streak they didn't give us the coverage it deserved either. At times it sounded as if they were mourning the Nats lost season. Though they do have some good MLB coverage overall and Smoltz works for them too. I also agree with them about a number our flaws as a team. But more of that has to do with players lost to injury than usually noted. I'd like our team a lot better minus all the season ending injuries (Huddy, Beachy, key bullpen arms, Pena, Pastornicky, etc).

ESPN on the other hand is just terrible, again I cannot stand 'em.

Neither team that has to play the one game playoff used to get in at all. It's still better than being knocked out before the playoffs start.

So what you're saying is we should just go back to best record in the league goes to the World series, and we should just junk half the teams in baseball as well.

No, I'm saying I actually like the changes. I'm just rebutting Heyward's argument that it's unfair for teams to play a one game playoff. Well, using similar logic, would it not be unfair for the last wildcard team to not get into the playoffs at all. All that hard work in a 162 game season and you don't even get a playoff game?

I personally like the idea of the division winners having a huge advantage over the wildcard teams. I don't know how you could have a wildcard game be anymore than one game. It would be unfair to the division winners if they have to sit on the sideline for 5 days.

50PoundHead

I didn't like the first wild card (but you need four teams in the playoffs if you are going to have three divisions) and I really hate the second wild card. I agree with weso that it isn't fair for the division winners to sit around for a week while the wild card business is conducted, but I think the obvious solution is to dump the second wild card.

Garcia has pitched well since coming up, but he I don't know how he'll stand up if he's on the playoff roster when the competition gets dialed up a few notches. It appears Wood is headed for the bullpen to be a 3rd LHP.

It was ruled an error and changed to a hit according to MLB.com last night. Then later on they had it as an error again in the boxscore. So maybe they messed up updating the MLB.com page at some point. Whatever the case, that's how it read when I made that post. Further, I am glad they corrected the original ruling regardless. But I still don't think much of the official scorers in Atlanta. They have ruled anything close an error for Simmons all year long. Thankfully in the end Gattis got credit for his hit.

It just goes to show how messed up the playoff system is in MLB. The team with the best record in the National League isn't favored. You spend a whole year with the focus being on the teams with the most rotation depth, then when the playoffs hit, the schedule favors those who have the best 1-2 starters. Makes no sense. I get the scheduling and everything, but it's just backwards to me.

Other stuff that has bearing on the postseason that I don't care for, in descending order:

All-Star Game determining hfa

play-in game

The WC in its orginal form was a great idea because there were times when the best 2 teams just happend to play in the same division. Remember when the Braves and Giants both won 100+ games, but the Giants went home at the end of the season? That was a failure in the current playoff system, in my opinion.

There is simply no way an 88 win Cards team had any business playing a 94 win Braves team in a one game scenario to reach the NLDS. It was a joke to make anything in baseball come down to a single game, and the punchline was the infield fly call that sunk the Braves chance at a comeback in that game.

The best 4 teams in the NL that year were clearly the Nats, Braves, Reds and Giants, and all 4 would have made the playoffs...which is the whole point of playoffs. If 2 teams are tied for the WC spot then make them play a play-in game regardless of their head to head records. I think this 1 game playoff is terrible, but I'm sure it makes the industry tons of money, so it's not going anywhere.

stpeteirish

system is flawed but any fix cannot, IMO, make the playoffs any longer than they already are. It literally takes a month now from the end of the season to the 7th game of the World Series. If it gets any longer they'll have to play in November, way too late for my taste, not to mention too cold in most venues.

bravesnumberone

They would just have to cut the season off in early to mid-September, thus trimming the schedule. We don't need longer playoffs like the 2-month NBA cluster****.
