why the Marlins find themselves having to sell all their good players?

I understand Loria was bad, but what exactly did he do?

Their payroll is unsustainably high. If they would have kept status quo (for a 77-85 team) the payroll would have projected to about $150M in 2018.

New ownership thinks it should be about 1/2 of that. They can't move some of the players they would like to move so they are moving others that they don't necessarily want to move but must to meet payroll demands.

BTW, new ownership knew this when they bought the team. The Jeter BS that's coming out is just deflection. They knew they would have to move Stanton even before they put pen to paper. Now, Jeter doesn't show at the Winter Meetings because he can't take the heat.

MLB is a disgrace. They threw Jeter a bone and he got the Marlins because the MLB wanted him to. There was another buyer who was willing to not shed salary, but the MLB didn’t want that so Jeter is in Miami panhandling and selling off players.

Loria knew what he was doing. He backloaded contracts to pad attendance in the years before he sold the team. It’s like how home owners don’t upgrade any appliances 5 years before they plan on selling. The new owner and the seller both know what’s going on, yet they still agree to the deal.
