This is one of the worst umpires I've seen since the CB fiasco last year. At least calling balls and strikes. Scherzer was getting calls two feet off the plate and we haven't gotten a single call that touched the lower end of the strike zone. He was squeezing Minter bad that inning.

Only complaint I have about Snit today was his choice to go with Sam Freeman in the sixth. It was obvious that Washington would counter with Zimmerman which means that at bat would be the highest leverage of the game.

In that scenario I would have still made a pitching change, but I would have brought in a RHP (Vizcaino), but if you insist on bringing in a LHP, then Minter would have made the most sense.

Luckily Sam Freeman is a good pitcher himself, but it’s moment like that where Snit’s strategic abilities are exposed.

Waddle to mound after Viz walks another in 9th to load the bases.

Harper to the plate, 0-1 swinging fastball inside corner, 0-2 swinging at pitch in dirt, 1-2 in dirt, 2-2 on a 50' pitch, IFF to SS

Matt Adams, bases loaded, 2 outs, --- 0-1 called fastball, 0-2 swinging fastball, Ks swinging leaving the bases loaded.

Obviously we can expect the offense to regress a good bit. But then you gotta think once the guys like Flaherty, Tucker, and Swanson cool down a bit, hopefully we will get Inciarte and Ozzie going. Then Acuna gets up. We could end up with a respectable offense this year.

I doubt anyone would claim PB on waivers as other than catch the ball he doesn't help. He didn't hit last year and isn't so far this year either. Plus he hasn't been a real stolen base threat in years. He can still play CF okay but that's not enough IMO.

We have been doing that with Tucker all year. I think they have done it a little earlier than I would typically like, but overall I think its good strategy. Probably has a lot to do with AA bc Snitker never did that with Kemp last year.

Tucker is a rookie that’s happy to be there while Kemp was a pouty veteran with 50 million on his deal. Different leverage.

Braves1976
04-04-2018, 04:26 PM
I saw Kemp strikeout to end the Dodgers loss last night, he went 0-4 in that game and has started slow. While he and Tucker are DH level bad on defense, Tucker has certainly started better this season with the bat.

In 825 innings in the OF he has accumulated -8 DRS. That's like a half step ahead of Kemp but still not good.

His last few years with Houston they thought so, he played more at DH than in LF (and Houston's band box doesn't leave much room to cover in LF). He did look bad defensively with them in the games I watched. I am not saying Kemp isn't worse though, Kemp is as bad as pretty much anyone you can name. He should be taken out of games around the 6th too if you have a lead.

BTW, can we add Stewart back and DFA Perez instead? I don't like his pitch framing at all. I love the kid's arm but his bat and pitch framing is probably why the Angels DFA'd him. Whatever the case, I suspect he is DFA'd too as soon as Flowers is back. Hopefully Flowers comes back sooner rather than later and doesn't rush back too soon.

Braves1976

Baltimore may come calling for him soon if their RF and LF options keep stinking it up. I saw their RFer today was hitting .091 and struck out twice going 0-4 and their LFer is hitting .150. Hopefully they get desperate and actually give us a prospect and take on Nick's money left, or most of it with a good prospect in return works too. Then when you call up Acuna soon you have Acuna in RF, Inciarte in CF and Tucker in LF.

They said today on the broadcast that the Braves haven't set a return timeline for Camargo and they want to see him play a couple of full games in the minors before calling him up. I'm sure that Flaherty starting out well helps with the decision not to rush him.

Even when he did frame it okay there were a few strikes the ump just refused to call while giving strikes well off the corner to the other side. I hated that ump, though he did give us a couple high strike and low strike calls at key times to somewhat make up for it. One of those was with Freeman pitching with the bases loaded too.

Julio has been better at Coors, oddly enough. Now whether that continues is another story. Coors is not a good place for any flyball pitcher to pitch. I don't like the idea of Sanchez pitching there either.

The ump was clearly horrible today but Perez's framing skills didn't do our pitchers any favors. He stabbed at anything not in the middle of the zone and dropped a ton of pitches.

Braves1976

Didn’t Julio have an era in the 2s vs Nats last season?

Good catch, Julio gave up 7 runs at home his first start vs them but followed that with three in Washington where he gave up two runs total in those games (that in his second game vs them). He went 7 innings in each game, and 7 scoreless the last two games. His ERA was 3.24 total but he was great in Washington. He also did his best on extra rest as he would be on if starting game one in Washington. So yea there is a case for him starting then instead of Sunday.
