I still have faith that Gohara can figure things out and become a successful starter, but I think he also has a really good chance of being a valuable bullpen piece. Its possible that by the time he figures things out, our rotation is full and we have to move him to a high leverage bullpen role.

Interesting. that would be an amazing outcome.

Doesn’t Fulmer throw a FA that averages 96?

Wilson has ditched the 2 seamer on a tip from the FO. Throwing the 4 seamer and getting that kind of speed of it apparently. You can go back and look at the box scores and tell when it clicked for him.

BTW, you would think a Fulmer comp would earn him a top 100 nod.

That’s what seemed weird to me. FG has been the ranking lowest on Wilson for sure.

Apparently saw his outing last night. Will be a bigger write up on his daily prospect notes later today. That should be a good read...

Bryse Wilson touched 97 several times last night and sat 93-95 late in the outing. He pounded the zone with his fastball (72 of 98 pitches were for strikes) and blew it past several hitters up above the strike zone. His slider (mostly 83-85, though he lollipops some slower ones into the zone for first-pitch strikes) flashes plus but is mostly average and is only capable of missing bats when it’s out of the zone. Wilson’s slider is fringey and firm, without much bat-missing movement, but the velocity separation off of the fastball is enough to keep hitters from squaring it up, and it’s going to be an effective pitch. The entire package (Wilson’s physicality and stuff) looks very similar to Michael Fulmer and Wilson’s delivery is much more graceful and fluid than it was when he was in high school, when scouts thought it would impact his ability to command the fastball and possibly move him to the bullpen.

I have Fulmer with a 95-96 FA with above average rise (~60 overall), a slightly below average SL, and an above average CH.

Without the above average CH I don't think we can realistically expect Wilson to be the next Fulmer. FG hangs a 45 present and 50 future on his CH, for what it's worth.

I thought wilson also had a sinker. Hard four seam and then a good hard sinker paired with a slider.

Holy ****...

I Touki'd this guy and thought he was 23-24 for some reason.

Why am I subconsciously thinking some of these pitching prospects are older than they really are? Have the recent Wislers and Blairs jaded me this much?

I did the exact same thing. For some reason I was thinking he was out of college and was like 24. Being 20 changes everything for him.

Gwinnett twitter account says he was on a limited pitch count. Makes sense after the talk about him having shoulder issues and building back up.

It looks like Williams Perez grew a beard and is making a comeback as a LHP.

For those confused, Bryse Wilson had committed to the University of North Carolina and the Braves had to go over slot to lure him away from that commitment. Looks like a good investment thus far. I'll admit I was skeptical when they went over slot.

Here's a nice little article about Wilson from two years ago, just after he had graduated from high school: https://www.newsobserver.com/sports/high-school/article88217857.html

Orange HS - not far from Chapel Hill. Was going to play football as well had he gone to Carolina - was a really good athlete.

It's hard to not be very positive about Bryse Wilson's year, even if he had stayed in AA for the rest of the season (he should've). The word on him was he's been working on a changeup which had been looking good and made it more likely he'd be able to stay as a starter, I wonder if he's scrapped that however with the recent game report here.

The AAA promotion to me is a little strange because given he's still probably developing a pitch. I'd like for him to spend at least 3-4 months working on it next year, but I can definitely see him making an August debut.

The thing I think many are missing about several of these promotions is that I don't think it's out of the question that AA's liable to stuff the pen full of strikeout guys if we're still in the race in 2-3 weeks.

Not that I see Bryse as a candidate for that role this season (or that quickly), but I honestly think we may very well see Gohara, Fried, and Touki replace Allard, Sobotka, and possibly even Biddle at some point down the stretch. Most of those guys would be starting to wind things down pretty soon if we weren't in the race, so having Wright and Wilson get a little exposure in AAA isn't a bad idea since that's where they're likely to start next season anyway.

Just a stab in the dark, but I think the keepers and trade candidates have been chosen and we're likely to see several arms dealt this winter, even if they're not packaged in ways we'd all expect right now.

Keepers - Folty, Newk, Gausman, Soroka, Touki, Wright, Wilson, Anderson, Muller, Wentz.

There's your 10 who should start at Mississippi and higher next spring. If AA doesn't find a taker for Julio this winter, Touki, Wright, and Wilson are your "break the glass" guys in Gwinnett with Anderson, Muller, and Wentz likely pushing to be promoted there by midseason 2019.

Maybe they make one of Gohara/Fried a pen weapon. Assuming Wilson continues to impress, that's likely going to happen with Weigel as well. It just really feels like Alex is going to make a major trade this winter and that whichever of Julio/Gohara/Fried/Allard are valued most highly by other organizations are going to be part of it. Maybe it's something we can't see because it seems so far-fetched, unless you really think we're as close as most pozzies do. Would Gohara and Dansby get Simmons back? With Brendan Rodgers knocking on the door, would Gohara, Fried, and Dansby get Trevor Story? Maybe. That kind of deal would certainly help them financially as they try to put the money together to keep Arenado - two cheap power arms for their rotation with Dansby at SS and Rodgers replacing LeMahieu at 2B.

Are those ideas out there? Sure. Something nobody sees is coming this winter though - AA's had the time he wanted to decide who stays and who goes, and the Gausman addition was a stroke of genius that cost far less than anyone ever could have imagined and it's provided him with unbelievable flexibility to do whatever he wants this winter IMO.
