To be fair, this was newcomb's 2nd year.

Newcomb year 2 = 1.9 fWAR, 4.14 FIP
Folty year 2 = 1.3 fWAR, 4.24 FIP

Dude was nails this year. He had a rough July, though a little bad luck was sprinkled in; but aside from he, he was incredible. The Folty trade and Dansby/Ender trade was one of the best in recent memory.

I feel good about Folty as a game 1 starter and I was ready to give up on him in the past. Thanks El Oso Blanco.

Yes. We definitely owe him for that. I’m sure his influence in that decision was essential to the process.

Wrens influence is all over the team.

To be fair, the substance of the argument was never that Newcomb could one day be as good as Foltynewicz.

I'd extend him but we do have him under team control for another 3 years.

The argument this year was that Newk was better than Folty now because he "threw better strikes in the zone".

Newk will likely start 2019 in the rotation, and be at risk of losing his spot to younger/better guys like Wright, Touki, Soroka and maybe Gohara if he ever gets his act together.

Kinda like what happened to Oliver Perez...

What does TrackMan say about Wright? I am just thoroughly unimpressed with his stuff and feel like his release is very easy for hitters' to pick up.

I'll stay out of it now.

Wright should McCullers it. I'm unsure the Braves let him.

But what Kiley said was the trackman stuff said if he went to a sinker as his fastball, he's a MOR with a 7-8 K/9.

I'm putting Newcomb in my trade package this offseason for something good. The Braves have 3 starters that can do the Oliver Perez or Andrew Miller if pushed out so he's redundant. Trade him, open 2019 with Folty/Gausman/Teheran/Touki/Fried and possibly end with both Soroka and Wright in the rotation, usurping Teheran and Fried, unless Fried is just absolutely runaway good.

Was Faulty’s home run rate down as well? Amazing what happens when a prospect learns to pitch instead of just throwing. They become more than a prospect at that point.

Wasn’t trying to shoot you, specifically, down—and I don’t disagree that Newcomb warrants patience, as well. I was just merely pointing out that your thoughtful comparison of indices was not where that early-season argument went. Instead it went: “Damn the indicators, Folty is just lucky-wild and Newcomb KnowsHowToPitch.”

HR/FB rate dropped from 11.8% last year to 9.6% this year. That's mostly luck. Like BABIP.

Ground ball percentage rose to 43.1% from 39.4% last year. That's less of a luck thing. More of a not hanging as many sliders thing.

Strikeout rate rose to 9.9 per nine innings from 8.3 last year. That's a making pitch kinda thing.

Walk rate dropped slightly to 3.3 from 3.5. Second half walk rate was even better at 2.9 per nine innings.

Fastball velo rose to 96.4 mph from 95.3 last year. Guy's a freak. Slider velo also up.

Slider usage was up to 27.1% from 21.2%. It's his best pitch and has dramatically improved over the last couple years.

Folty could be even better next year if he can keep the walk rate under 3 per nine.

You were also wrong about “Braves being 3 back by Friday.” Or whatever your nervous Nellie fingers typed. :icon_biggrin:
