We don't have a denominational policy - but most of our younger ministers would likely not want it - and that includes the staunchly, politically conservative ones. And many of our middle-aged ministers (like me) agree.
I don't like it either 50. The Church transcends nations, tribes, tongues and an America flag in the sanctuary smacks of a civil form of 'Christianity' that frankly speaking at best ain't worth much in my book. That said, like you, I understand and it's not a hill, as a pastor, I am willing to die on. There's one in our sanctuary (there wasn't one in my first church). In a few years, I'm hoping it's removed, maybe to the fellowship hall or something. Will take some patient teaching though.
Had a quick question for you. It was Boy Scout Sunday at my Lutheran Church last weekend and they did the color guard thing with the Boy Scout flag and the American flag. Got me wondering what your denomination's view is on the American flag in the sanctuary. I don't get worked up about it either way. Would prefer not having it in there, but can understand why some would and if that's the way the congregation goes, it doesn't mess with my view of the great beyond and the challenge before us. Curious about your thoughts on this.
