Just read this (quoted below) in Ken Rosenthal's article on his opinion of the Josh Donaldson for Brett Lawrie and prospects deal that was completed earlier tonight...
"The Athletics, according to a major-league source, have at least one more significant trade brewing. The source went on to say, “This is Billy re-working the club.”"
I am thinking Gattis/Justin for Samardzjia/Jaso/Reddick.
I wonder if Lawrie would be part of the deal coming to Atlanta. Something like Justin/Gattis/Hale for Samardzjia/Lawrie/Jaso. That would leave us with a full infield and about 20 million to find an outfield. Lawrie has sucked vs lefties the last 2 years and been injury prone so CJ could backup 1b/3b and start vs lefties.
I would say Gattis is who the A's are really interested in. Cheap, controllable guy that they could flip again in a yr or 2 once he gets a little expensive. May be something like this would work:
Oakland gets Gattis
Seattle gets Upton and Samardzija
Braves get Austin Jackson, Paxton/Walker, Peterson, and Edwin Diaz
Damn I hope this is a bad rumor. We don't match up well at all with the A's. Both teams are trying to accomplish the same thing, that is to rebuild for the future. I really hope this is just bad information.
This makes no sense to me either. Gattis is the kind of player they would go after, but they seem to be set with Norris/Vogt is a decent catching duo and they signed Butler to DH. The only way it makes sense is a 3 team trade with the other team getting Samardjzia. The mention of the Red Sox is a good 3rd team and the Lawrie deal could have been a precursor to this upcoming trade.
Why would we want a pitcher on a one year rental
Just because both names came up in the course of exploratory conversations doesn't mean that a trade would have to involve both.
