I was a simple man before I had money as well.
I'm not going to say that we can afford to do whatever we want, but our finances are at a point where we can rent a cabin for a few long weekends each year along with a couple of weeks at the beach and some time off to visit family. The trips are nice, but I don't know that I enjoy it any more than simple things I did as a kid like hunting with cousins or snapping beans on a shaded porch with extended family. Once the necessities are taken care of, happiness is more about attitude than means.
