Braves sign John Buck to Minor League pact

Per Mark Bowman on Twitter. With ST invite. Expected to begin season at Gwinnett.

This is another deal I'm actually pretty happy with. Very low-risk, could be a solid reward at the deadline or if we decide to trade one of our other catchers. No complaints here.

I only ever saw Buck play against the Braves, but he always seemed to come up with a big hit against us. The reward is he is a good backup catcher to have in reserve. Not a huge upside, just adequate protection in case needed.

Sounds like the Braves are uncertain about Pierzynski's Lairdership.

I think this may be a signing in case Bethancourt shows he isn't ready and can't handle the starting catcher job. I don't think they want him sitting the bench at the MLB level, when he could be getting regular at-bats in Gwinnett. Now with Buck in the fold, he and A.J. would/could handle the catcher position -if CB needs more time at AAA- in a possible platoon role.

I thought we already had enough catchers signed for AAA. But maybe they think Buck can help in case of injury, poor performance, etc.

That said, I'd rather have signed Soto who also got a minor league deal if they think Bethancourt may not be ready.

Plus—unlike Pierzynski—he looks like he hits the lairder a lot, and someone needs to tear up the post-game spread and keep Freeman from eating too much of it.

If only the team had a Buck for every time someone made that joke. Oh, wait...

    http://blogs.seattletimes.com/marine...or-assignment/

After the Mariners 2-0 win over the Twins, the club announced that back-up catcher John Buck had been designated for assignment.

It was not a popular move amongst the players, many privately grumbling about the thinking behind it. Buck, a veteran, was well liked and respected amongst his teammates.

Still, there had been growing concern about Buck’s defense particularly receiving and blocking pitches from some of the Mariners’ power arms. This wasn’t based on just the one game on Sunday where Buck had his issues when Taijuan Walker’s command went erratic. This move had been discussed for more than a week.

Food for thought. I think Buck is a nice piece of catching depth, especially considering the free agent options left available. Was going to make a crack about 39 year old Jose Molina, but then realized that Pierzynski is 38 himself.

Noticed that Doumit is still unsigned -- wonder where he ends up this coming season. Could be a nice, cheap bench option with power for the right team.

Chip Caray will probably refer to him as this at least once -- so many names synonymous with male genitalia on the team that he might just snap in a powder-fed euphoria.

I actually like this signing better than the Pierzynski signing.

Yeah, hard to complain since we got him for a bucket of balls. It's also nice to see Hart buck the TJS trend.

How long until we sign Joe Buck? I'll give Hart until midnight.
