If the Cards Extent Heyward for...

25M/year for 8 years (total 200M) this off-season, would you feel disappointed that the Braves didn't do that, relieved the Braves traded him because that is too much to pay for Heyward, or indifferent because we can do about as well signing other players for that money.

Dont see them giving him that much, but that is still alot of money for a guy who is an all-world defensive player.

But while is a good hitter, is inconsistent and struggles with LHP.

Well they would have to offer him that first and since Heyward would only sign for 20 years and 900 mil, there's no chance STL would be dumb enough to offer him anything short of that.

The Cards aren't signing him, period. Unless they are willing to pony up what Close wants and an opt out, it ain't happening. Close is determined to test the FA waters with Heyward so you won't have to play "what ifs" with the Cards. Heyward will go to the highest bidder.

I would not pay him that. Thats way too much IMO. You are paying for defense/baserunning for half of that contract on the wrong side of 30. Now if Heyward becomes a better hitter then I think that would be more than a fair deal.

Don't mind BRule. HIs purpose in life is to be an instigator.

Why wouldn't Jason wait to test free agency? Sure there is always that chance you suffer a major injury or have a bad year, but neither of those is very likely for Heyward. He is going to get huge bucks next offseason. If he has a similar year to his career numbers, I'd say he'd gets at least 8/200. If he has a breakout year that he is capable of, he might get Stanton money. I would be very surprised if he extends with St Louis, unless, as Ramadon said, they back up the truck for him.

As much as I like Heyward, I would not be willing to pay him 8/200. The most I would go is maybe 7/154, and that is a stretch.

I would be relieved because I wouldn't pay 25 million for any position player that can't even put up a .800 ops. Imagine if BJ'S contract was 8 years and we still had 6 years to go.....

Must be nice to have nothing better to do than sit around an invent all these hypothetical scenarios. The trade was made to acquire usable assets, in anticipation of his impending free agency. The Cardinals were aware of the risk with only one year left. If they don't sign him before the end of spring training, which they won't, it's virtually assured that he'll test the waters/

What happens when no ones offers him a contract because of what he agent "asks" for? Does he retire? Japan? Cuba? Basketball?

I'm sure the Cardinals are well aware that Wren had a brief conversation with Heyward's neighbor about his contract a couple years ago and they won't even waste their time.

I always thought Heyward had a very similar build to Calvin Johnson. Both are 6'5 and ~240 lbs with a long angular frame.

$25 million for 8 years would be a massive overpay.

Why would you waste time with a hypothetical question with that many "ifs"?
