Braves sign Cuban OF Dian Toscano to Major League Deal

Dian Toscano, a 25-year-old Cuban outfielder, has agreed to sign a major league contract with the Braves. Financial terms of the contract were not immediately available.

Toscano, who is around 5-foot-10, 200 pounds, is a lefthanded hitter with good bat control and strike-zone awareness. He never played on the Cuban national team, so he wasn’t a player scouts saw much of before he left the island.

Playing for Villa Clara in Serie Nacional, Toscano batted .356/.400/.452 in 86 plate appearances with eight walks and eight strikeouts in 2012-13, his last season in Cuba. The year before, Toscano hit .287/.438/.380 with 35 walks and 16 strikeouts. He hit just three home runs that year and never showed much power in Cuba, though he’s in significantly better shape and has increased his strength since leaving Cuba.

He was a left fielder for Villa Clara, and he’s expected to stay there in pro ball because of his lack of arm strength, though he runs well enough that he could see some time in center field.

Since Toscano is 25 and played five seasons in Serie Nacional, he’s exempt from the international bonus pools. He was represented by Rudy Santin and Manny Paula.

Hope this means we are going to keep Gattis behind the plate for one more year. I think his trade value will peak next year (if he catches), and I think one year of backup for Bethancourt could prove invaluable.

    I wish...just not a CB guy.

I'd much rather Have Gattis catch 2 days + 1-2 LF (depending on pitchers and days off) and CB catch 3 days....Then we don't have too many eggs in CB basket.

I've never heard of this guy and know nothing about him... but I automatically assume we will be overpaying him and he will be terrible.

That's the confidence I have in John Hart

Can't really judge this one for a while unless there's a lot of money involved which I can't imagine. Seems like a solid bat with good OBP skills. Maybe a 4th OF type?

More likely a cushion in the event they trade Gattis or keep behind the plate: Gattis was Upton's replacement when Upton was Heyward's replacement but now Markakis is Upton's replacement.

I have a feeling the Braves only want Simmons and Freddie from the starting 8 last year. And I have a feeling that's what we will get somehow.

I can't say much about this signing till I see the kid play. He was expected to only get a minor league deal so I guess our scouts liked what they saw of him. It also seems likely we had to give him a Major league deal to beat out the other teams interested.

This signing puts us back to 40 players on our 40-man roster. I am expecting that Constanza days on our 40-man roster are soon coming to an end.

At first glance on the main board only the first name is seen and I thought "Why would the Braves sign Dian Fossey?" Then I remembered she was dead.
