    Sheriff's Deputies Kill Suicide VIctim

    http://www.thedailybeast.com/article...kill-him.html;

If he attacked the cops that's one thing, if they shot him dead because he wouldn't drop the knife, they should be put in jail

Sorry for the title, tried to editorialize the title down from the longer one, obviously it didn't work

In a phone interview with Commander Chuck Mulligan of the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office, The Daily Beast asked if it was standard procedure to bring assault rifles, but not mental-health professionals, to a scene where someone is suicidal.
    Sadly, yes.

If he was actually alive before they killed him, the story will be whether he attempted to attack them or not. Of course the family thinks he didn't.

My comment / disappointment has a lot more to do with the lack of mental-health professionals than the type of gun. On the latter, I largely agree that parsing calibre and automation can be an empty exercise.

Not sure how departments can afford one, but would be certainly nice to have.

You would advise against bringing protection in responding to someone that is mentally unstable? I get your general point about wanting to bring in a mental health professional, but I fail to see how a mentally unstable person with a weapon shouldn't be considered a threat.

How's about he doesn't have a firearm weapon - methinks if

    a) he didnt have a gun
    b) we wouldn't need a team of good guys with guns then
    c) we could afford a mental health specialist that specializes in suicide threats.

    Speaking of flush with money
    Wondering
    a) how much it costs to arm and man a SWAT Team
    b) how often does a community actually need a SWAT Team
    c) are SWAT Teams really the most cost effective means of policing

"You would advise against bringing protection in responding to someone that is mentally unstable?"
I haven't seen anyone advocate not coming prepared for the worst. But a SWAT Team vs a suicide threat -- c'mon man

It was a Suicide by cop. The guy started to charge the cop who unfortunately had to protect himself.
