As I recall, they put a million dollar (or another lowball amount) offer out to David Ortiz, Travis Lee, and Robert Fick first-come/first-served and Fick snapped it up. Ortiz signed with the Red Sox for slightly more and Lee with the Devil Rays for much less.

Ortiz would be have been nice for a season or 2, but we weren't signing him long term no matter what. He was already a liability on defense when he signed with Boston.

Fick had a nice first half that year -- .296/.354/.482. We were kind of excited about him at the time. But boy howdy was that a rough second half of the season.

The Fick discussion shook loose a faded memory of his post-Braves career, and I ran it down on Wikipedia. The 2006 Nationals had both Fick and Matthew LeCroy on their roster, and LeCroy got pressed into service as starting catcher in a game where the team's starting and backup catchers were both hurt. He was catastrophically bad, giving up something like seven stolen bases and committing a couple of errors, and Fick had to come in to replace LeCroy in the middle of an inning. Frank Robinson literally cried talking about it in the post-game press conference.

The only memory of Fick that sticks in my mind is that he elbowed Eric Karros when he was running out a ground ball in the playoff round against the Cubs (Cubs won that series). Fick knocked the ball loose, but was called out and fined by both MLB and the Braves. I remember Bobby being harsh in his assessment of Fick's action and Fick wasn't back the next year.
