Chopping With The Braves And Rolling With The Tide
Best of luck to Todd. Always hoped he would hit more so we could get his glove in the field. He was gonna be out of options, so this outcome not too shocking.

I think the 3 Johns are just trying to troll Dayln.

When you remove the 3 guys who will be FAs (Detwiler, Jackson, Pierzynski) and Moylan on an MiLB contract, the 40-man now sits at 35.

When we're talking about 4th or 5th outfielders, the candidates aren't going to be perfect. But there will be some decent options in AAA. Smith and maybe Toscano. Swisher and Bourn have had injury issues in recent years. They along with Maybin could be traded this off-season or flipped next season. So the identity and qualities of the fifth outfielder or even the sixth guy in AAA will likely come into play next season.

Also thought it a little interesting to see Heyman's mention that we actually might be in on Wieters worth making note of.

I've bounced around on him and see both sides of the argument, but if his rough season actually has dropped his value to something reasonable and Baltimore doesn't saddle him with a QO I'd think I could get on board. He closed with a .305/.409/.508/.917 slash line in September/October.

Kinda pathetic to see yourself as a message board knight in shining armor. How impotent does someone have to be in real life to resort to playing hero on a message board?

I agree wholeheartedly, but the problem in the National League now is that the 4th OF has to be more than a one-tool guy. I hate to sound like an old codger (which is nigh on impossible), but before the era of 12- and 13-man pitching staffs, guys like Cunningham stuck around for a long time because teams could afford to keep a 5th OF who was pretty much just an OF. Unfortunately for a bunch of AAAA guys, today's roster construction has spelled their demise.
I'm guessing we will see a bunch of minor league FAs signed as possible reinforcements. Smith has some ceiling and if he hits early in the season at Gwinnett, I wouldn't be surprised to see him assume some role as the season wears on. Outside of that, my guess is you will see a set of guys signed who could be thrown into the breach if necessary. I think the thing with Cunningham is that he was taking up space on the 40-man and the incoming minor free agents (and perhaps Mychal Jones if he is held over) wouldn't take up a space.
I suspect we'll also pick someone in the Rule 5 draft, yet another reason to keeps an extra spot open on the 40-man.
Just noticed the MLBTR revised this up . . . A LOT. Now at $4.9m. Must have been a typo.

As for losing Cunningham, it's probably a bit of a blessing in disguise. He's proved useful enough in spots, but the extra 40-Man roster spot is probably going to be useful for now - not to mention that we've got plenty of money available to scoop up a Will Venable/Drew Stubbs/Matt Joyce type who might have more value to a contender than Cunningham at the deadline a little later in the offseason if need be. Add someone like that to Maybin, Bourn, and Swisher all in the last year of their deals and Coppy's phone could be as busy as Hart's was this June and July.

Signed: LHP Andy Otero (re-signed)
Glad to see this. I believe he would have been a six-year free agent. Doesn't throw hard but has some deception. His performance in AA will tell us a lot about his chances to make it as a ML pitcher.
It just makes too much sense. His 2015 stat line is what I would expect from him going forward so I dont know you can call it a rough season. Taking a year off from TJ surgery seems like a benefit if you consider thats one year less of wear and tear on his body. It all depends on how much it takes to sign him but catchers who can put up an average OBP with 20 HR power and good defense dont grow on trees.
