Flowers/Riley and an Allard/Fried/Gohara/Wilson type?
Too much, too little, just right?
There's the wrinkle that might make it all work out for the Braves. Not only does it upgrade C, but it also ends being close to salary-neutral since Flowers is making $4M in 2019.
Flowers/Riley/Pitcher for JTR. Adds $2M to payroll.
Pitcher for Gray/Frazier. Adds $9M to payroll.
Dump Duval, sign a LHH 4th OFer. Adds no salary to payroll.
Wait for value BP additions in January. Adds $5M-$10M to payroll.
Total opening day payroll ends up right around $125M, as projected months ago.

I think that is pretty darn close. They get their veteran catcher for 2 years. Get a quality future 3b, and a quality arm in Fried/Gohara.Wilson....i'd prefer to move Allard in that deal as I don't think he is who we thought he was, but I don't think it'd get the deal done

The thing with possibly putting Flowers in the deal as Scheff said is you only gain about 2 mil in salary. Flowers makes 4, JT is projected to get 6.
Gray had pretty good numbers away from YS but the Yankees apparently are asking for alot.

Or....
Sign Happ. Adds $16M to payroll.
Riley/Pitcher/filler for Haniger. Adds nothng to payroll.
Dump Duval, sign a LHH 4th OFer. Adds no salary to payroll.
Mostly rely on internal options for the BP. Adds no salary to payroll.

I'm warming up to the idea of getting Frazier. It's still a question as to whether he'll be able to make the jump to the majors but he's got talent and if he's going to break out and establish himself as a quality player, it's a good bet this is the year it happens.
I wouldn't mind a trade for Gray and Frazier provided the cost is reasonable.
If the Marlins are wanting a vet catcher including Flowers in a JTR deal now makes some sense.
Getting Donaldson and Realmuto would allow us to sit back and wait for the right deal on a corner OF.
AA on braves clubhouse report now on 680thefan
Says a lot of calls on Camargo. as expected.
Says not close on anything now. In contact with a few free agents, talking to a few clubs about corner outfielders...don't be surprised to go into the new year with no moves

Gray can't have much value. Teams generally aren't dumb either. He hasn't pitched over 170 innings in 3 years and fell out of their rotation last season. If they got more than a Alex Jackson/Freddy Tarnok type of prospect in return, I'd be very surprised. That is unless they attached Frazier to him.

I don't think they went into the offseason fixated on Andrew McCutcheon.
I think they probably had their sights on a number of guys and felt they could land someone for a deal they liked once the market began to resolve itself.
I give AA enough credit to be as accurate on forecasting free agent deals as Kiley McDaniel, the dude from MLBTR, or Keith Law or the regular fan. I don't think AA is surprised that the market gave McCutcheon three years, because I don't think anyone was especially surprised he got three years.
