Like they had a choice?
I just think the penalty was excessive. Its kind of like getting a 50k fine for a crime. It breaks a poor person and means nothing to a rich person. Void the signings and a 1 year total ban from international signings would have been sufficient.
Maybe I am just frustrated to be on the wrong side of severe punishments for my favorite teams. Feels much better actually being guilty this time.

the new penalties were:
1) voiding of contracts that the Braves were only able to obtain by funneling money under the table to players and buscons
2) one year ban on using bonus pool for 2019
3) 50% reduction on 2020 bonus pool
They lost a third round pick in MLB Draft (apparently for offering Drew Waters a car to get in under the bonus pool limit), which is the only penalty that was arguably a little excessive. But that too demonstrated a possible willingness to circumvent the draft the same way they tried to circumvent international signings and that would be a major cluster.
I thought it was a pretty rational and proportionate penalty, personally.
Mahki just liked a tweet discussing how much the Braves have left with which to sign him (495K).

Have we ever received one of those competitive balance draft picks?

I don’t know if this was a good draft, but it was a damn near perfectly executed one.
Congrats to the Braves scouting team for pulling this off.
Of a sudden we have a plethora of power hitting first basemen

So we signed our top 25, 33 of our top 34, and 35 of the total 40. Not bad.
I wonder if this approach will continue when we don't have multiple first round picks.
I am all for 'throwing away' our first pick and focusing on high school kids later in the draft.

We filled the system back up with this draft no doubt and like c2c said, it was perfectly executed. I have a feeling in a couple of years we’ll look back on this draft and say it was a pretty good one.
Man, getting Estes and Backstrom is a pretty big deal.
I think the problem will be not having a high first rounder, moreso than not having an extra first rounder. We saved that million with Langeliers but all of the slot value at 21 was given to Shewmake. It’s hard to take a talent worthy of a late 20s pick and get significant savings from them.
It’s probably still a doable strategy, just with 2-3 high schoolers instead of the 6 we picked this year.
We can always execute this sort of Day 3 strategy on a smaller scale. That 5% wiggle room allows any team to go above slot for 2-3 HS players on Day 3.
With respect to this draft we now have to wait 5 years to see if the strategy paid off.

Backstrom's official signing announcement has gotten over 430 likes in the first two hours. I fully expect that to double.
