The pen is the easiest to fix. The more arms we have the more we can flip at the deadline to reliever needy teams if we suck. If we catch lightning in a bottle and are actually competitive then a good pen will keep our starters from breaking down. I think the Maybin dump was more to buy a starter though.

I would as well. Unfortunately I don't think anyone would at this point. I'm pretty sure the Dodgers were shocked we were as in love with Olivera as we were. With how poor he's hit, how health looks like it's going to be a big issue, and with his age, I don't think we could find someone to take his salary off our hands, much less give us anything of value.

No way you trade Olivera now with his stock so low.

Due to lack of interest, Braves introduce a new sale to get people to the stadium. Buy 1 ticket get 5 free.

Bowman now saying we have closer to $20m to spend. Started off giving a $25m to $30m range, then settled on $30m for a few weeks, and now closer to $20m than $30m. Who knows.

The Braves will not say exactly how much money they have available to spend this winter. But it has become quite clear that their available funds were much closer to $20 million than $30 million.

We should ask MLB to change to 4 outs instead. Gives Fredi enough chances to bunt with all the pitchers in the lineup.

This news is not even relevant to me, except insofar as it relates to the possible sale of the team.

Besides, we already spent our smartest money of the offseason.

That's not how it's written at all.

"But it has become quite clear that their available funds WERE much closer to $20 million than $30 million".

Assuming the cash available was $20M-$23M before the Maybin trade, that number should be close to $30M after the Maybin trade. The payroll tally I've been keeping pretty much agrees with that.

There should be plenty of cash to do something along the lines of signing Freese, Kazmir and a couple BP arms. Maybe not those exact names, but the money is there to add a bat for LF/3B, a MOR pitcher, and a some help in the BP. That might just be enough to push the team to 80ish wins.

    I think we'll be right in that 67 - 72 win sweetspot.

I'd actually prefer to debride another couple layers, see if we can't get down to 62 and have a fighting chance at the number one pick. So we can pick a wild, hard throwing lefty with projectibility who, if he works on his secondary pitches and can get his walks under 6.0/9, could settle in as a MOR starter (or third baseman) until we can flip him for prospects.

I don't see the point in spending 30M just to do it . Give it to charity or something.

I agree with you. Bowman is referencing the amount of $ we started with, not what we have currently. However, those two numbers aren't much different. We gained $5.5m in 2016 by moving Maybin. We added $500k in Krol, and $3m in AJP. So we have $2m more than whatever our budget was to start with.
