I'm all for tearing down statues of people. You'd be hard pressed to find someone without a disqualifying event in their past. You can legitimately argue statues of Jefferson should be removed as it's celebrating a slave owner. The George Floyd statue in New Jersey should be removed as it's celebrating a criminal and drug addict. The William T. Sherman statue in DC should be removed because it celebrates a man who committed war crimes.

I say don't have statues glorifying flawed people. If you want to have statues celebrating what these people did then have something celebrating that and not the person. Have a statue celebrating the writing of the Declaration of Independence, have a statue memorializing the unifying effect Floyd's death had on the black community, have a statue celebrating the end of the Civil War. You can debate whether these events are deserving of a statue but I guarantee if you pick through the life of virtually anyone with a statue to them, you'll find deeds that should disqualify them from having a statue.
