It's basically buying Kerr who has upside. You see what quality non closers get in FA these days so if Kerr turns into one of those the 5.5 million for Carpenter will look cheap. They might even be able to pawn him off on another team to lessen that amount somewhat. Kerr is a lefty with a very good swing and miss breaking pitch that has 5 years of team control left and 1 minor league option left.

RT @UNCBlue It’s not a shocking trade at all. The bullpen was in need of three things going into this offseason:
- guys with options
- lefties
- high octane velocity
Add those up and you get Kerr from a team wanting to cut payroll by including Carpenter.
He’s not a sure thing, but he has a big fastball, lots of swing and miss, not a lot of hard contact and he doesn’t walk a ton.
Buying a BP arm that is likely to sit in AAA for $4M is not something a team does if they can’t afford to add a SP. AA has essentially spent $55M on the BP, and I refuse to believe he did that while not being able to afford a legit #3.

So which lefty is getting left off the roster? Are we trading Minter or Lee?

Maybe AA just doesn't necessarily like the options available. And with our offense it's not like this legit #3 is something we really need for the regular season. Worst case we can trade for an arm at the deadline after we have a better feel for the team's needs and the useful players available.
That being said there is some other strategy going on here. The focus on high power lefty relievers who have lots of team control relievers that don't necessarily need to be ready next season means they are likely long term Minter and Matzek replacements as both are FA at the end of 24

What I don’t understand is AA aggressive to get Nola according to rumors and after that crickets.

AA is building some insane depth. I love the focus on stuff.

We know the bullpen wont be a weakness anytime soon. I do think he gets another starter. Once Yamamoto signs i think we’ll see Cease and maybe Burnes traded. Im surprised we haven't heard much out of Smell.
DOB has also confirmed that Carpenter will be traded
