Here's the deal, cajun is right. In a locker room it's very easy to wind up on the outside clique. If the coach is doing prayers and the team leadership is pushing it, if you don't join in you can find yourself on the outside quick. Short of being so talented you have to be played you could wind up easily on the outside of the team. Of course he has no evidence, because he isn't in the lockerroom himself, but some parents said their kids did it because they felt pressured. It's very easy for something that starts innocently to morrph into something else, which is what seemed to happen here.
Personally I find the behavior weird, I went to a Catholic high school, and we never prayed on the field after games. We had like masses before big games sometimes (I don't really remember when they happened, it may have been because our playoffs/homecoming would fall late november sometimes which is advent so it could be tied to that?) but again, never on the field, and our school was funded by the diocese.
