    Sigh.

I already said, for the sake of argument, that black people don't swim because eof historical racism or whatever you wanna attribute it to.

    Fine.

Is that the end of the dumb thread?

    How do we fix it?

What does goldy propose we do to help black people understand that swimming is fun and they can do it?

I don’t care about you agreeing for the sake of changing the topic to your argument that isn’t the point of this thread

    No doubt.

It’s sad that we still don’t face our past so we can move forward

In those times almost no one had access to pools.

Most people swam in creeks, ponds, and springs. Most people had access to those I’d think.

That’s because it’s not productive for today and ten years from now.

The world keeps turning whether you like it or not.

It’s like 50$ for a set of swim lessons around here. Not exactly a barrier to entry and FTR I’d be an irresponsible parent not getting my kids swim lessons knowing they’d at some point be around water. So in the interest of not being an deadbeat parent- I’d get my kids swim lessons so they can at least survive in the water at the bare minimum

Seems like a dumb thread overall, but like always, you deflect from the actual question because you don't like the answer.

    A lot to unpack here

Didn’t really put you as one to not face history and admits wrongs that hinder today

Was never under the idea the world wouldn’t keep spinning

Ok, congrats on having that $50 and that scenario of you being a better parent than others in your eyes

My wife had to pass a swim test before the well known white supremacists at UNC would give her a degree.

Congrats on a totally irrelevant point to the discussion at hand that comes nowhere near the actual topic presented

Of course it does. It just isn't relevant in a way that you appreciate. I doubt that one of the most progressive universities in the country would require black students to prove swimming skills prior to receiving a degree if this history you're bringing up made much of an impact today. Especially after stacking the deck so heavily in those students' favor just to get them into the school in the first place.

Not really a lot at all sorry if it was overwhelming.

Actually its hard to face history when its behind you, thats reflecting. You have it backwards. The idea that we need to look back to move forward is false from the jump. Move on, the real world is not going to coddle anyone because those things happened.

No one says it didn't happen- but like i pointed out above- pools aren't common back then. Most people especially in the deep south swam in creeks and ponds. I don't think people poured bleach in those, like ever.

I doubt anyone learning to swim today knows of those instances, and that they shouldn't swim because of it. And no one that did those things is keeping anyone from swimming today. But you can remind them with this thread i guess?

The only thing this thread does is give people a reason not to try something they might enjoy. That is all.

Everyone just got $1400 (except me) so everyone can afford swim lessons i'd think. But yes, thinking about how to prepare my kids for the perils of the world and not to shy away from them one way or another does make me a good parent I think. But I mean thats a low bar IMO.

I think this thread went somewhere around 100 degrees different than Goldy wanted.

Ironically- chlorine used in pools is much higher in concentration than store bought bleach by the gallon that the person in that photo is using. So basically- thats a mild pool sanitzer- much less potent than what you are supposed to use. Less abbrassive than what you get at the pool store FOR your pool sanitization use.
