    If Shanks source is right on his information, sounds like it must be Chavez or Schierholtz. My guess is Chavez since I can see them wanting another option for centerfield too. Chavez hit .305 vs righties with a .344 OBP and .753 OPS (overall numbers were quite worse as he did nothing vs lefties and I mean nothing pretty much literally). Further, I don't mind signing someone like Chavez to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training. Plus if it turns out to be Chavez, at least he can play defense unlike Gomes who is terrible.

    Gomes against LHP 2012 - 2014: 271 / 378 / 459. Not too shabby.

    @mlbbowman
    The #Braves are still pursuing Jonny Gomes. He's a potential option to platoon with Almonte in LF.

    Yeah, his range is consistently below average by every measure I've seen. Not "Adam Dunn" bad in LF, but definitely bad. Looking at the the "Frankenstein" aggregation metric that Fangraphs uses (linked below), Gomes actually rates as a better LF defender than Justin Upton over the past three years. Range is worse, but arm is better.

    Sounds like Seattle, Miami, Baltimore are still interested in Schierholz or Chavez.

    I'm assuming we're looking at Gomes as a clubhouse guy as much as anything else. I'd as soon use that $4M for BJ/CJ salary relief, but I guess that ship has sailed. I'd still probably rather see what Zoilo/Terd/Hunter/Cunningham can do.

    Astros seemingly attempting to build the worst defensive OF in baseball. While not much is known about Springer, after the move to get rid of Dexter Fowler, they go and add Colby Rasmus, maybe he could be good, but my guess is in that weird park he'll suck. Then there's Evan Gattis who'll have a counter for number of times the wall screws him up vs number of homers he hits.

    Unfortunately for them, the Twins have that worst defensive OF on lockdown. Already the worst in baseball last year, they doubled down KFC style by adding Torii Hunter, the worst defensive starting RF in baseball.

    The LHH may also be Jason Kubel if not one of Schierholz or Chavez. I had not considered him last night since he is basically a DH being so terrible in the outfield. But if we're considering Gomes, who is also terrible, then we cannot rule out his platoon partner being of the same type. Plus Kubel has hit righties a lot better than lefties throughout his career.

    I think the Braves will break camp with 5 OFs and take their chances w/o a legit 1B backup since FF will play everyday. Assuming they close the deal with Gomes, a straight platoon with Zoilo and Gomes would make sense. They'd then need the 5th OF to be more of a backup CF for BJ insurance, pinch runner, overall defensive replacement. Eric Young Jr probably fits that best of those that have been mentioned. I'm thinking that Schierholtz may have enough of a market to get a big league deal.

    Maybe Cunningham breaks camp with the team.

    Bowman reports that we're competing with an AL team to sign Gomes. Gomes might see the potential for more ABs on a team that has a DH spot.

    "Once Atlanta traded projected left fielder Evan Gattis to Houston last week, Gomes stood as the one unsigned free-agent outfielder who piqued its interest. The two parties have continued to talk, but at least one unidentified American League club is also showing interest in Gomes."

    I never got my hopes up for him anyway because I knew at best he was a major long-shot.

    You are treading on thin ice with that critique of J. Upton.

    For the record, I think range is vastly more important in LF than arm. But it's quibbling. I was less than impressed with J. Upton in LF, but from what I've seen of Gomes, I think one would really have to splice and dice numbers and methodologies to really contend that Gomes is better. The other defensive metrics really clobber Gomes.

    Yea, I watch a lot of A's games and Gomes has played a lot for them in the recent past. Justin Upton did look rough his first year in left, but last year he was much better. I wouldn't even compare him to Gomes as Gomes is so bad he should be a DH if you have that option. Justin Upton doesn't have a good accurate arm, but his range in left last season was good and that's why he had a even DRS overall (Justin didn't cost us any runs overall last year unlike his -8 DRS his first year). Plus he can play out there regularly. Gomes doesn't even play out there that much because he is just too terrible to leave out there a lot.
