I'm not really sure what you are trying to say.

Considering the Padres were giving Kemp away it's pretty horrible.

They didn't give him away, they paid the Braves to take him.

So it was Wood and Peraza for Oliveira, etc. Then some the later the Padres paid the Braves to take Kemp. The deals have little to do with each other unless you really just want to spin the Oliveira trade into something.

I was thinking maybe the salary offset from the Dodgers?

If there is one thing I've disliked that the front office did it was try to spin the Kemp trade as obtaining value from Oliveira.

Your right. But they did give him away if you think about it. They paid the braves less than they owed Kemp for us to just take him. They wanted to just get rid of him and they agreed to take a cancer off our hands for us to take him. Either way his protection is well worth 18 million. Easily.

It wasn't. I think we are better off than if we just cut him. But next year or the next I have concerns. That is why I hope we could trade him at end of season.

And for the record Kemp does make our lineup better by being in it. It's because he himself is not a bad hitter and has had an incredible start to the season. But this just isn't Kemp. Adding any good hitter would have the same effect. Logically the idea of protection doesn't make sense. And logically if it did exist then it would be apparent in a more consistent basis.

If they had just cut him, they could have still traded for Kemp and demanded salary relief.

Oliveira was irrelevant in the trade.

I am not surprised though that Kemp has been good offensively. And I think his offensive value outweighs his defensive liability more than the analytics show, but that's a general complaint.

However, I'm not sure he's worth 18 million a year. If he's going hit .290/.340 with 35 HRs, I guess he might be worth it, but still would love to move him for the salary relief and a prospect. That would be good magic there.

I see everyone has somehow managed to dig even deeper into their respective trenches.

Meanwhile, I'll just continue to enjoy these games.

Is it not possible to do both? I'm pumped that Kemp is beasting. Doesn't change my opinion that he's a horrible defender and I don't think he's suddenly going back to his LA days offensively.

There are various ways to adjust for this if you believe it. And it is not a crazy belief. But it is better to subject it to the discipline of a methodology that adds up in a consistent way the value of run prevention and run creation.

I just find it funny that after a really fun three homer game the reaction of the board is to bicker.

It's become the culture of this board.

You're right. I need to reconsider my posting behavior to not contribute to this.

Not to put a whammy on it, but all this crying about Kemp's defense seems to obscure the good plays he makes. Many left fielders are inferior glove guys, and he's hardly the worst in the league. The more people parrot this (and Markakis' shortcomings) the easier they are to totally ignore. If this board had existed in 1995, I'm sure there are people here who would say, yeah, we're World Champions, but we could have been better.

This is a lineup that I can rock with all year long.

I don't know where he'll end up offensively, but for almost 300 ABs here, he's over .850 ops. Suntrust appears to be a much better hitter's park too, so maybe he can maintain that which I'm good with
