1) Europe wasn’t breaking apart in order to form the EU. Also, it’s adorable to think that in this hypothetical that the two countries would just jump into being allies when each side would seemingly hate the other deeply.
2) I meant what do we do with the existing military?
I'm not going to pretend like I have every detail sorted out... Maga corporations spin off all the time and it takes time.
At first thought I'd say disband the military and allow for reenlistment under the new countries and the new commander in chiefs. This would likely reduce the size of the military substantially... which is yet another good outcome here.
But if you wanted to pay me to consult on actual plan... I'd be happy to put together some concepts that would work. But the idea of "this would be logistically difficult so we must remain in this rapid dissent forever" is not a good answer.

I simply think you’re living in a fantasy world if you think that the outcome would be the two sides peacefully coming to a resolution on questions like “who gets the weapons” when the whole point is that the two sides are so opposed that we shouldn’t be a nation anymore.
Also, breaking apart a mega corporation is so far below the level of what you’re discussing here that you’d might as well say that couples break up sometimes and it takes time.

Well... if we don't peacefully agree to part ways... I suspect we will be doing so unpeacefully.

The real solution is federalism. To get there you need to gut the General Welfare and Commerce clauses and the 14th Amendment.
To pull that off, I think a genuine threat of Civil War or secession would have to exist. That still may not be enough because you'll never get it done through DC, no one there will be willing to give up that much power.
It would have to be an Article 5 convention of states, two thirds of them agreeing to strip the feds of the majority and their power. Getting red states on board is simple enough, but it runs contrary to the ideology of the blue states. They would have to see the federal government as an existential threat.

The left wouldn’t want secession because they’d have a failed nation in less than five years.
The migration to the southern free prosperous lands would be epic. Building couldn’t keep up pace with the amount that would be coming. Maybe I sholulf just buy a house now for speculative purposes....

More than 1,300 people convicted of possession of less than two ounces of marijuana will have their criminal records cleared after Gov. Jared Polis announced Thursday he would issue a mass pardon.
Polis previously pardoned those convicted of possession of less than one ounce of marijuana, but lawmakers in 2021 raised the legal possession limit of marijuana from one to two ounces. Those receiving the pardons did not need to apply and do not need to act further to clear their criminal record.
“Adults can legally possess marijuana in Colorado, just as they can beer or wine,” Polis said in a news release announcing the pardons. “It’s unfair that 1,351 additional Coloradans had permanent blemishes on their record that interfered with employment, credit, and gun ownership, but today we have fixed that by pardoning their possession of small amounts of marijuana that occurred during the failed prohibition era.”

No one is perfect, but between this, his past support of expanding charter schools, and his downright sane takes on COVID, I hope Polis is a big part of (D) future. Help rescue the party from the loony left.
I like Polis. I’d be happy to see him on the ballot in 2024.
