Apparently he was told recently that he was on the way out. So I don't think that he was fired in response to his comments there, but I do think his comments were a little freer because he knew he was out.
Mr. Tillerson learned he had been fired on Tuesday morning when a top aide showed him a tweet from Mr. Trump announcing the change, according to senior State Department official. But he had gotten an oblique warning of what was coming the previous Friday from the White House chief of staff, John F. Kelly, who called to tell him to cut short a trip to Africa and advised him “you may get a tweet.”

Two things: anyone with any kind of tales to tell is going to be kept close and rewarded for loyalty. Also, apparently he was a Trump guy, but his firing was obviously not a Trump initiative, so it makes a certain kind of Trump-sense that he'd be rewarded with that gig.

Pompeo is a hawk. Trump has wanted him at State since last summer. His appointment pretty clearly foreshadows the tenor of the upcoming negotiations with North Korea and the imminent pullout from the Iranian agreement.

Haha, so apparently they've also canned the Undersecretary who released a statement about Tillerson's firing.
Pompeo is not a bad choice for state imo. Bolton is a joke.
