Firefighters forming human shield to block national police from harming people in Catalan. Thats what protecting and serving looks like. This is a non binding vote. Spain using violence is going to turn public opinion against them.

National police physically throwing people out of polling stations

Watch for the flying stomp on a peaceful person. Independence is virtually guaranteed now.

Current injured total is 761. Interior Minister claims 9 police injured. One got hit by a chair lol. I dont know how to post twitter videos. Interior Minister posted several cases of people fighting back to justify the polices violence. So predictable. There going to be some consequences and repercussions from todays events.

My favorite part is the Interior Minister blaming people for having kids with them. Nothing like blaming the people your using beating up for your violence. Did he tell you they have a court order? He says it in literally every tweet.

Spain is like bizarro land. The police beat up voters/protestors for doing what the.government says is unconstitutional. In America the police beat up protestors who are protesting actions by the government they say is unconstitutional. Funny, either way it ends with the government sending in the thugs to beat people up.

I get your point, but there is really no comparison between what Spain has done in the past few days and anything the US has done in the past few decades.

You sure about that? Riot police roughing up people is pretty common these days. Did you see what went on at the DAPL protests?

You know, I can't really say that I am sure. But I have watched every one of the Catalonia videos you have posted and I can't recall seeing anything similar here where the police were the aggressors. You look into more of this stuff than I do, so I may be wrong.

Either way, the takeaway here has to be that the Spanish gestapo were obviously instructed to be brutal. I applaud the Catalonians for their self control. I promise I would have been stupid and angry enough to attack back if I had been in any of those crowds.

Ehh. Neither of those were as brutal or widespread.
In the first video it looked like some people being told to get back out of some established perimeter, they didn't and then they got pushed back. I don't like how it was done but I also don't know the entire context. Most of the cops in the video were just maintaining a perimeter.
The DAPL video was an attack by protesters on a police secured position. There were trucks blocking the road as a barricade and the protesters pushed them out of the way to get to the police. Their punishment was being sprayed by water hoses and shot by air soft guns. My kids did that stuff in the back yard this summer.
Neither is the same as 50 guys wading into a building and swinging clubs at everyone.

Translated from Spanish, on the lengths the Spanish government went to in disrupting the Catalonian independence vote:

    https://politica.elpais.com/politica...50_933924.html

    CYBER-DISPOSAL BY THE ARMED INSTITUTE
The referendum battle was not fought on 1 October alone at the gates of the polling stations. Before they were opened, telematic crime experts from the Central Operative Unit (UCO) of the Civil Guard fought a cyberspace battle to prevent the polling stations from having a universal telematic census that would allow the Government to take a false legality to the consultation. The image of the vowels of the polling stations scoring the voters' data was the reflection that in this case the game was won by the armed institute.

The battle had really started on Friday, when the UCO agents took control of the Generalitat's Center for Telecommunications and Information Technology (CTTI). They then blocked 29 databases that could be used to support the query. A hard blow to the Catalan Executive that caused that the own Carles Puigdemont was involved to try at all costs to regain control of it. Unsuccessfully.

After this victory, the computer experts of the Civil Guard were certain that there would be a reaction from the Generalitat. They were not mistaken. At eight o'clock on the morning of October 1st, Government spokesman Jordi Turull announced the implementation of the application that was to provide a telematic electoral census to the 2,315 polling stations. Half an hour later, when the vote had not yet begun, the UCO was able to deactivate it, according to EL PAÍS, sources familiar with those polls point out. They also acknowledge that the application had serious encryption errors that made it very vulnerable and facilitated its work, but that also made all the census data contained therein during the minutes that was in operation within reach of any hacker.

The computer experts who collaborated with the Generalitat in organizing the referendum tried to lift the application hundreds of times during the day. According to the Civil Guard, they never got beyond a few minutes. The UCO put it down again and again, so that it only worked at times and from some tablet or mobile phone. In some schools, the members of the tables could not use it throughout the day

The Civil Guard also had to face a blog on Sunday that supposedly could be telematically voted. Although the Generalitat denied any relationship with him, the UCO also deactivated it. In addition, it detected atypical connections to a server hosted in an Amazon cloud made through several open ports on the website of Casa de les Punxes, a museum located on the Diagonal of Barcelona. The page of this cultural space was still blocked yesterday.

One has to wonder why they felt the need to bash so many heads if they were already cyber disrupting the vote. I guess they wanted to teach the upstarts a lesson.

Egypt 'escalates LGBT crackdown' after rainbow flag display

Egyptian authorities have arrested at least 22 people in the past four days as part of a campaign against LGBT people, Amnesty International says.
Thirty-two men and one woman have now been detained since rainbow flags were displayed at a pop concert in Cairo last month, according to activists.
Anal examinations have been reportedly carried out on five of those arrested.
The flag-raising provoked a public outcry and prompted the public prosecutor to order an investigation.
Homosexuality is not explicitly criminalised under Egyptian law.
But the authorities routinely arrest people suspected of engaging in consensual homosexual conduct on charges of "debauchery", "immorality" or "blasphemy".

China’s Djibouti military base: ‘logistics facility’, or platform for geopolitical ambitions overseas?

Chinese troops at the country’s only overseas military base conducted their first live-fire exercises last week in Djibouti on the Horn of Africa, near some of the world’s busiest shipping routes.
Beijing has described its military outpost as a logistics facility for resupplying Chinese vessels on peacekeeping and humanitarian missions. But satellite imagery and unofficial reports show the base has military infrastructure, including barracks and storage and maintenance units, and docking facilities that can handle most vessels in its naval fleet.
    ....
Analysts say Beijing could use the base to project its power into North Africa, as well as to strengthen its position in the Indian Ocean.
“What it could mean for Chinese ship deployments into the Indian Ocean is they could [maintain] much longer periods of patrolling in the Indian Ocean,” said Rahul Roy-Chaudhury, senior fellow for South Asia at the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies. “The familiarity of the Chinese navy with the Indian Ocean has increased tremendously.”

But this has raised concern in India about regional maritime security, particularly in view of China’s other regional naval bases in countries such as the Maldives and Sri Lanka, analysts say.
“China’s maritime strategy is oriented to counter India in the Indian Ocean, particularly building naval bases around India’s neighbourhood in the Indian Ocean,” Bawa Singh, an international relations scholar at the Central University of Punjab, said.

A new maximum penalty of 15 years’ imprisonment will also apply to terrorists who publish information about members of the armed forces, police and intelligence services for the purposes of preparing acts of terrorism.

The tightening of the law around viewing terrorist material is part of a review of the government’s counter-terrorism strategy following the increasing frequency of terrorist attacks in Britain this year.

I want to make sure those who view despicable terrorist content online, including jihadi websites, far-right propaganda and bomb-making instructions, face the full force of the law,” said Rudd. “There is currently a gap in the law around material [that] is viewed or streamed from the internet without being permanently downloaded.

“This is an increasingly common means by which material is accessed online for criminal purposes and is a particularly prevalent means of viewing extremist material such as videos and web pages,” added the home secretary.

Ahh England. You had a good run.

Catalonia to move to declare independence from Spain on Monday

Catalonia will move on Monday to declare independence from Spain, a regional government source said, as the European Union nation nears a rupture that threatens the foundations of its young democracy and has unnerved financial markets.

Pro-independence parties which control the regional parliament have asked for a debate and vote on Monday on declaring independence, the source said. A declaration should follow this vote, although it is unclear when.

Catalan President Carles Puigdemont earlier told the BBC that his government would ask the region's parliament to declare independence after tallying votes from last weekend's referendum, which Madrid says was illegal.

The Catalan leader is due to make a statement at 9 p.m. (1900 GMT) on Wednesday, after an all-party committee of the region's parliament meets to agree a date -- likely to be Monday -- for a plenary session on independence.

Spain has been rocked by the Catalan vote and the Spanish police response to it, which saw batons and rubber bullets used to prevent people voting. Hundreds were injured, in scenes that brought international condemnation.

Catalans came out onto the streets on Tuesday to condemn the police action, shutting down road traffic, public transport and businesses, and ratcheting up fears of intensifying unrest in a region that makes up one-fifth of the Spanish economy.

Giant python: Indonesians eat huge snake after man defeats reptile

A giant python in Indonesia met an unfortunate end when it was eaten after it lost a battle with a local man.
Security guard Robert Nababan encountered the snake on a palm oil plantation road in Sumatra's Batang Gansal district on Saturday.
Mr Nababan tried to catch the python, reports say, which was 7.8m (26ft) long.
It attacked him, and man and reptile fought until Mr Nababan killed it with the help of some villagers.
The guard survived with serious injuries.
The python was not as lucky as Mr Nababan - its body was strung up for display at a village, before it was chopped up, fried and eaten.
The 37-year-old did not give an exact reason for why he tried to catch the python, but said there were villagers who could not cross the road because of the snake.
He said giant pythons were common in his area, a remote district of Sumatra. "[There are] at least 10 sightings of them a year. In the dry season they come out looking for a drink, in the wet they come out to take a bath in the rain."

I don’t have a snake phobia, but damn, I wouldn’t want to be within 1,000 miles of that thing.
