The public's views on the economy continue to cruise at lofty levels but the optimism does not appear to be lifting the president's approval rating.
The third-quarter CNBC All-America Economic Survey found 43 percent of the public believes the economy is excellent or good, a record high in the 10-year history of the survey. Thirty-six percent believes the economy will get better, down a couple of points from last quarter, but just 23 percent say it will get worse, down 6 points.
The four-quarter average for every major economic metric in the poll --- the outlook for the economy, housing, wages and the stock market --- is at a record 10-year high. Those four quarters cover the time span since President Donald Trump's election.
However, just 38 percent of the public approves of Trump's job as president, up a point from June, while 52 percent disapproves, also up a point.

House Republicans are leaning toward setting a higher tax rate for wealthy Americans than the one outlined in the framework unveiled by the White House and GOP leadership last week.
That plan called for consolidating the current seven tax rates into just three — 12, 25 and 35 percent. However, it gave lawmakers the option of adding a fourth rate to ensure that high-income households do not receive the biggest benefits—and a senior Republican said they are "highly likely" to take it.
The Republican, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss internal negotiations, said the precise rate has not been determined. But, the person said, it will not be higher than the current top rate of 39.6 percent.

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch of Utah attacked a recent study by the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center that found half of the tax benefits in the GOP proposal would accrue to the wealthy. Speaking at a hearing on Tuesday, Hatch said that no numbers have been finalized and called the report a "blank-filling exercise designed to cast the framework in the worst possible light."
"The framework does not include any specific information about things like the break points for the individual tax brackets, the value and indexing of the enhanced child tax credit, or the precise rate for the top bracket," Hatch said. "Without those and other key pieces of information, there is simply no way for any outside party to produce a credible analysis of the framework, let alone a detailed estimate of revenue and the distribution of tax burden."

The Trump Administration's North Korea Strategy
Some have criticized the president and his Cabinet for a failure to “get on the same page, ” but before criticisms can be fairly offered, it’s necessary to take a step back and try to understand the U.S. strategy as the president seems to understand it.
Secretary Tillerson recently told reporters: “We are probing, so stay tuned.” And then, “We ask, ‘Would you like to talk?’ We have lines of communications to Pyongyang — we’re not in a dark situation, a blackout.” Adding, “We have a couple, three channels open to Pyongyang.”
The following day the president tweeted the following:
“I told Rex Tillerson, our wonderful Secretary of State, that he is wasting his time trying to negotiate with Little Rocket Man,” using the moniker he has chosen for the North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un. “Save your energy Rex. We’ll do what has to be done!”
A few hours later Heather Nauert, the State Department spokeswoman, wrote on Twitter: “#DPRK will not obtain a nuclear capability. Diplomatic channels are open for #KimJongUn for now. They won’t be open forever.” The second part of the tweet seems consistent with what both Tillerson and Trump have said. Channels are open, but, presumably, North Korea has to meet certain conditions before the United States will negotiate.
It is also clear that the Trump administration, all the way up to the president himself, prefers to solve the North Korean problem peacefully, without military force. How can we know this? Because the administration is taking the time to do the diplomatic heavy-lifting to lead the international community to squeeze the Kim regime to force him to his knees.
North Korea analysts will say that above all, Kim is motivated primarily by “regime survival.” And, Kim believes he needs a nuclear ICBM to guarantee his regime's survival.
Put another way: it isn’t Kim's nuclear missile program that will ensure his regime’s survival-- meeting U.S. demands will ensure the Kim regime’s survival. Once Kim is convinced of this, Secretary Tillerson can walk him through the next steps. But the channels won't be open forever.
If it turns out to be true that our "wonderful secretary of state" did indeed call the president a moron let along an f-word moron, then I would have to say America is great again and that I will have to reconsider my plans to investigate job opportunities abroad.

Asked directly by a reporter whether he was referring to Trump in using the word "chaos," Corker, who announced last month he would retire in 2018, responded: "(Mattis, Kelly and Tillerson) work very well together to make sure the policies we put forth around the world are sound and coherent. I read an article about our NK strategy a while back that I am trying to find again. It basically suggested that Mattis ajd Tillerson decided to use Trumps crazy tweets as the bad cop so they can play good cop.
